Tunnel Boring Machine

• The construction of new tunnels under Eglinton Avenue is done by tunnel boring machines (TBMs)

• Each TBM moves forward by pushing off against concrete segments it has placed behind it to line the tunnel

• The operator advances the machine as soil is removed from the TBM face through a conveyor system

• The launch pit remains active for removal of muck/spoils

Timeline for Mount Pleasant Headwall Works

With appropriate permissions in place, Metrolinx’ contractor will: • Conduct some utility relocation before headwall construction • Install fencing and secure the perimeter • Install grout lines in the roadway • Jet grout plant will be set up prior to the headwall

construction • Begin Mount Pleasant headwall construction in late Summer

2015 • Approximately 4-6 months anticipated at each wall

• TDSB has been engaged on the property requirements and discussions have been on-going with Metrolinx.

• Commencement date for permanent and temporary requirements is October 15, 2015.

• Duration is 4 years, plus an option to renew for 1 additional year.

TDSB Proposed Alternative

• TDSB proposed an alternative vent shaft location

• Vent shaft would be on TDSB property instead of City property (shift from blue area to red area on drawing)

• Intent to reduce construction impacts to parking area and site operations

Evaluation of TDSB Proposed Alternative • Vent shaft location proposed by TDSB – Pros:

– Closer to the station box – Could result in less disruption during construction

• Vent shaft location proposed by TDSB – Cons: – Vent shaft is more visible adjacent to the school and fronting on Eglinton – Vent shaft is closer to openings in the school buildings. The vent shaft must be a

minimum of 12 metres (horizontal distance) from any operable windows or 2.5 metres above any operable windows.

– Will cause permanent reduction in TDSB staff parking area – Depending on height of the vent shaft, it could block sightlines for service vehicles

entering and exiting the loading area – Could cause impacts to the existing school structure/ foundations – The work zone, including cranes and other large machinery, would be closer to the

school

Evaluation of TDSB Proposed Alternative

• Based on preliminary design and engineering by Metrolinx, the Brownlow boulevard was determined to be the best location from a technical perspective

• The vent shaft location proposed by TDSB will not eliminate disruption to normal parking, garbage and deliveries during construction

• In the long term, the current vent shaft location selected by Metrolinx is better for TDSB as it does not permanently affect parking, garbage or delivery operations 28

Roles and Responsibilities

• Metrolinx is managing the construction project. • City reviews Metrolinx proposals for interim traffic control

measures during construction. • Toronto Police, City Transportation and Metrolinx meet

regularly to discuss issues and project needs such as enforcement, traffic management and parking.

• City is responsible for approving any temporary and permanent changes to turn restrictions, traffic calming, etc.

Our Approach to Traffic Management

• Maintain a minimum of one lane eastbound and westbound on Eglinton in construction work zones

• Buses and general traffic will share this lane • Additional lanes will be provided if space allows • Metrolinx will work with City of Toronto Transportation,

local elected officials and neighbours to monitor local traffic

• Signal timing may be modified and turning restrictions may be added or relaxed to improve the flow

Proper City permitted traffic signage will be installed

Transit Services during Tunnel Construction

• Both eastbound and westbound TTC stops in the affected area may be shifted and relocated for the safety of transit riders

• Watch for TTC posted signs indicating the adjusted stop locations

Pedestrians

• In the construction zone, for temporary sidewalks or existing sidewalks the goal is to maintain minimum 1.5 metre sidewalk widths wherever possible

• Access to properties from sidewalks should be maintained

• Some sections of sidewalk may be closed and crossings will be available at traffic signals

• Please take care when travelling near construction. Watch for additional signage directing pedestrians
