6. Thutmose I

7. Hatshepsut• She is generally regarded

by Egyptologists as one of the most successful pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty, possibly killed by her step son Thutmose III

8. Thutmose III

• Considered a military genius; he was known for expanding the borders of Egypt greatly.

• Made 17 raids on neighboring lands and was known for crushing his enemies

• May have killed his predecessor (and step-mother AND aunt) Hatshepsut

9. Amenhotep III

• His reign was a period of unprecedented prosperity and artistic splendor, when Egypt reached the peak of her artistic and international power.

10. Akhenaten

• Ruled during the New Kingdom; was known for attempting to abandon polytheism and adopt monotheism (worship of only Aten), married to Nefertiti

11. Nefertiti

• She and her husband were known for a religious revolution, inz which they started to worship one god only.

• May have ruled independently after her husband died (before King Tut became pharaoh).

12. Tutankhamun (aka King Tut)

• Ruled during the New Kingdom; became pharaoh at age 9 and died at age 19.

• Became famous after his tomb was discovered virtually untouched since it was sealed.

13. Seti I

• Father of Ramses II (Ramses the Great); known for his great architecture feats and restoring Egyptian prestige

14. Ramses II

• Seemed to do everything over the top. He is probably the most prolific of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, siring over 100 children with more than a dozen wives. He is well regarded as the builder of more temples and statues than any of the other ancient Egyptian pharaohs.

Ramses the Great’s Tomb

15. Ptolemy I

• A Macedonian general under Alexander the Great, who became ruler of Egypt and started the Ptolemaic dynasty

16. Cleopatra

• While her affairs with Julius Cesar and Mark Anthony have become legendary, Cleopatra's intelligence and political astuteness may be the most interesting pieces of information of all regarding this female pharaoh.
