1. Description
1.1 Overview
The ehb SMARTrmc is an integrated monitoring, telemetry and alarm notification system designed to work seamlessly with electronic engine controllers, ECUs, and other devices that support the SAE J1939 protocol over CANbus, J1708/J1587 protocol over serial communications, Modbus RTU com-munications and support custom communications to external controllers via RS232/485.
The ehb SMARTrmc monitors many conditions and transmits them via GSM or CDMA cellular, WiFi or via a serial port to a back-end system of a customer’s choosing.
For a J1939 interface, the ehb SMARTrmc can monitor up to 500 of PGNs. CANbus speeds up to 1.25Mbits/second are supported. This information is sent to the internet-based system ehb SMARTcloud based on time and/or events.
For a J1708/J1587 interface, the ehb SMARTrmc monitors all PIDs that are being transmitted, the maximum number of PIDs that can be monitored is up tp 500. This information is sent to the internet-based systems based on time and/or events.
For an OBD-CAN interface, the ehb SMARTrmc monitors many parameters and computes additional fuel and distance-based data that is sent to the internet-based system ehb SMARTcloud based on time and/or events.
For a Modbus RTU interface, the ehb SMARTrmc requests data via a dedicated RS-232 or RS-485 link to one or more slave devices. The ehb SMARTrmc can read/write coils, status and holding regis-ters in 16- or 32-bit format.
Antenna connections are 1 SMA connection for the GPS and 1 SMA-RP (reverse polarity) connection for the cellular/WiFi.

1.2 Important Notes for the Use
How to use The device must only be operated with the supplies provided.
Use a mild cleaning agent to clean the device.
Do not insert any objects that are not designed for the specific purpose into the openings of the unit, as this may cause problems in the electrical components.
When operating the device, always observe general accident prevention regula-tions.
Safety Do not operate the ehb SMARTrmc device within range of strong electromag-netic fields. Observe the temperature specifications listed in Chapter 5.
Storage ehb SMARTrmc devices that are not being used must be stored as described in the operating specifications.
Shipping When shipping, equipment must always be shipped in the original packaging or in correspondingly sturdy packaging.
Use of unsuitable packaging constitutes negligence, hence rendering null and void any claim to repairs under warranty.
Maintenance The ehb SMARTrmc requires no maintenance throughout its entire service life and requires no special care.
Opening the
ehb SMARTrmc
The ehb SMARTrmc contains any parts that can be serviced, replaced or re-paired by customers or third-party maintenance personnel.
The ehb SMARTrmc sealed to protect against any unauthorised opening. Please note that unauthorised opening will destroy the device.
CAUTION
Do not use high-pressure cleaning equipment to clean the device.
Service personnel are to be fully instructed that high-pressure cleaners will damage the device and void the warranty.

1.4 Disposal of Devices
Product
At the end of its service life, dispose of the product in accordance with legal requirements.
Batteries
As a consumer, you are legally required (German Battery Ordinance – Batterieverordnung) to return all used batteries. Disposal in household waste is not permitted!
Batteries/accumulators containing hazardous substances are labeled with the symbol shown to the left, which indicates that disposal with household waste is prohibited. The markings for the respective heavy metals are: Cd = Cadmium, Hg = Mercury, Pb = Lead. The respective marking is found on the battery/accumulator, e.g. under the rubbish bin icon shown above. Used batteries/accumulators can be returned free of charge to a collection point in your com-munity or wherever batteries/accumulators are sold.
You will therefore be meeting your legal obligations and helping to protect the environment. Thank you for your consideration.

1.5 Capabilities
The ehb SMARTrmc is designed to provide a highly configurable, robust platform for remote monitoring applications. The powerful 32-bit processor, FLASH and SRAM allow:
• virtual real-time transfer of monitored conditions,
• local computations from monitored conditions,
• user-specified PGNs or PIDs to be monitored,
• event and data logging,
• exception reporting to Internet-based application ehb SMARTcloud,
• tunneling into the ehb SMARTrmc or equipment attached to the ehb SMARTrmc via a wireless connection,
• remote wireless programming and diagnostics,
• e-mail or SMS messaging sent on monitored conditions,
• parameter setting via SMS messaging,
• GSM/CDMA/WiFi
1.6 Monitoring capabilities
The ehb SMARTrmc internally monitors channels, which are mapped to various inputs and outputs from CANbus (J1939 or OBD) or J1587 values, external inputs, system conditions and computations across these inputs. A channel defines the data that is being monitored, the calculations that are be-ing performed on the data, limits values that are being compared and how the data is to be formatted.
For example, a channel may simply be the current Battery Voltage or it may be a calculation of the to-tal run time compared to a service limit so that the customer knows to change the oil after 200 hours of running.
The following are default PGNs or MIDs that the ehb SMARTrmc monitors. Additional PGNs to be read/written are application specific.

Operation
1.7 Internet communication capabilities
The ehb SMARTrmc can send notifications to the internet based on many different conditions. Each notification typically consists of GPS location, date/time, an event code and associated data. The event code provides a unique identifier to indicate the reason that data is being sent – e.g. normal scheduled update or Diagnostic Message received.
The exact format of the message being sent is application specific. Protocol documents are available from ehb electronics gmbh.
Conditions on which events and data are or can be sent to the internet:
• Any monitored value exceeding a pre-defined or user-defined limit
• Any Diagnostic Message received via CANbus or J1587
• A digital input changing state (on/off)
• An analog input transitioning into any of these states (Low-Low to Low, Low to Normal, Normal to High, High to High-High)Switch On/Off
• A scheduled update timer expiring
• End of trips and end of the day
• System faults
• A command from a user via SMS
• Power up or awakening from sleep mode
1.8 Positive Acknowledgement
The ehb SMARTrmc can be set to expect that all messages sent to the internet-based application ehb SMARTcloud will be acknowledged. If they are not acknowledged, the ehb SMARTrmc sends the report a single time and assumes the report was received correctly.
The necessary protocol documentation for this parameter can be queried by ehb electronics gmbh.
1.9 Store and Forward
In the event that any messages cannot be sent from the ehb SMARTrmc to the internet-based application ehb SMARTcloud or are not acknowledged, the ehb SMARTrmc stores the messages to be sent when communication becomes available again.
1.10 Real-Time Clock
The Real-Time Clock (RTC) is set in one of the following ways:

By default, the ehb SMARTrmc is configured to set the RTC via the GSM modem contacting internet time servers.
Automatic via GPS

The ehb SMARTrmc sets the RTC by reading the current date/time from the GPS module.
Manually GSM Config field (3), Auto Time Set.
Set to disabled (0).
Set the time via the Debug port through the Maintenance menu.
Once the RTC is set, it is backed up by the on-board battery. If the Method of setting the RTC is Auto-matic, the ehb SMARTrmc will check the time and midnight and adjust the RTC if the time differs by more than 30 seconds.
2. Installation and Setup
2.1 Overview
This chapter provides information on installing the ehb SMARTrmc and confirming its initial operation. Please read the entire chapter before starting the installation.
2.2 What is the Installation Process?
Installation consists of the following steps:
1. Unpacking the Equipment
2. Mounting the Equipment (mount the ehb SMARTrmc in a vertical position if possible, if not, try to minimize the amount of rain that may come in contact with the antenna connections or waterproof the antenna connections)
3. Connecting the Main Power
4. Connecting to the CANbus/J1939/J1708
5. Suitable cable harness after instructions mount
6. Confirm that the CAN LED goes out when the engine is started.
Each step is described in detail in the remainder of this chapter.

2.3 Unpacking the Equipment
The ehb SMARTrmc is shipped with the following: • The ehb SMARTrmc in either a Deutsch thermoplastic enclosure. • A dual Cellular/GPS antenna, or WiFi and GPS antenna, and a • User’s Guide (or download www.ehb-electronics.de) • Optionally a CANbus cable
2.3.1 Operating Environment
The operating temperature of the ehb SMARTrmc is -40 to 158ºF (-40 to 70ºC).
2.3.2 Mounting the Equipment
Mount the ehb SMARTrmc vertically and provide loops for each antenna cable to prevent water intrusion.

2.4 Enclose wiring
The ehb SMARTrmc mounted in a Deutsch enclosure has a 12-conductor connector that provides the following signals:

2.5 Power Fuse
The ehb SMARTrmc has a 4 Amp mini blade automotive fuse, Littlefuse p/n 0297004.WXNV.
2.6 Cable Assemblies for ehb SMARTrmc
Optional the wiring harness ehb2350 can be used. The wiring harness is designed to connect the ehb SMARTrmc with the CAN Bus via connector Deutsch DT043P and battery (wires with open ends). The wiring harness has a length of 3m.

2.7 Mounting the Antenna
The dual antenna supports both cellular and GPS. In order for the GPS portion of the antenna to op-erate, it needs to be mounted horizontally with a view of the sky. If the antenna is mounted outside and may be subject to lightning, a surge arrestor should be inserted between the ehb SMARTrmc and the antenna. If the antenna is mounted inside, it can be affixed to or mounted near a window.
NOTE: Provide loops under the ehb SMARTrmc enclosure for each of the antenna cables.
2.8 DIP Switch Decode
The ehb SMARTrmc has an 8-position dip switch located on the side of the board. If any of these settings are changed, the power must be cycled for the new settings to take effect.

NOTE: If all switches are set to ‘1’ on power up, the ehb SMARTrmc will come up in BOOT LOADER mode, which is for downloading new application code.
NOTE: Switch positions 1 and 2 override any other settings for Ports 2 and 3.
NOTE: The default settings for Ports 2 and 3 when all switches are up is:
Port 3 in Debug Mode at 57600 baud
Port 2 in None Mode (disabled)
2.9 Jumper Settings
The ehb SMARTrmc has several jumpers that pre-set certain operations, set in the factory. If any of these settings are changed, the power must be cycled for the new settings to take effect.

ehb SMARTrmc, use an Ohmmeter to measure across the CAN (+) and CAN (-) signals with the power off.
If the resistance is at or near 120 Ω, then you DO want the resistor installed (J4 in).
If the resistance is at or near 60 Ω, then you DO NOT want the resistor installed. (J4 out).
For jumpers 21 through 23, the arrowed end of the diagram indicates pin 1.

2.10 SIM Card Setup
Correct communication with the web-based backend server requires that the APN, IP and Port be correctly assigned prior to deploying the ehb SMARTrmc.
NOTE: If the APN is not correct, the ehb SMARTrmc cannot be communicated with Over the Air, either outbound or inbound.
