Consumer Data Use Trends
Cisco anticipates global mobile traffic will increase by about a 92.3%
compounded annual growth rate, with a run rate of 75 Exabytes per year by
2015. It predicts that worldwide data traffic will grow from 25 to 26 fold by
2016.
Nielsen reports that over 12 months, the amount of data the average
smartphone user consumes per month has grown by 89% from 230
Megabytes (MB) in Q1 2010 to 435 MB in Q1 2011.
Mobile data traffic worldwide is exploding in operator networks, but this has not
translated to a commensurate increase in ARPU. Growing data ARPU by offering
attractive content services, smartphones, and market-specific plans becomes
critical for revenue and for churn control.
