e History of Class 44-E 44,E-just two numera ls ond a single lotter, Rother insignificant,
Isn't 1t? But ro us, the 350 men who hove achieved whot we wonted most, 1t is symbolic of the most 1mportont days of our lives.
To ston this history of our class, we must go bock to the months of June to December, 1942. It wos then that the men of this class were toking mental and physical exominotions for appointments os Aviation Cadets in the United States Army Air Forces. Then, in Jonuory of 1943, we began getting our orders, We reported to large Army A•r Forces fie lds for Army basic training There we spent two or three weeks of learning to walk Most of us hod been wolktng a ll of our ltves, but the way the Army did ti was quite di fferent We got the first whiff of poison gases, shot our fi rst sub~machine guns ond, os o matter of fact, got shot ourselves for the first time. In 1wo or three Y<eeks 1t wos oll over
We boarded tro1ns and were sure that we were on our woy to Ctoss1ficot1on But when the troins stopped ond we stepped out, we found ourselves, not In the Army, but in college. The Army hod seen fit to augment our own schooling wi th o few months of irs own. We hod such sub1ects as novigotion, weather, history, $peech and physics. At these colleges mony of us got our first rides in air· plones--<1nd found the first taste of o throll that grows on you every llme you go up
Clossificotlon was neKt-ond there we s.pecioli ied in worry. To "wash out'' or not to " wosh out," tha t was the question. They took us down for physica ls. They looked in our eyes and put drops in them W• 1umped up and down ond they took our pulse; we lay still and they took our pulse They checked our hearts After they fin· 1shed f1nd1ng ou t what mode us tick, they sent us over to see just how g ray the gray motter really wos We set for seven hours ond by the end of the first hour we were so discouraged and hod such 1nfert0rity complexes thot we almost didn't core whether we possed. And then we ~ent to some gentlemen who could ask the most embarrassing questions, and we hod to answer them These gentlemen decided whether or not we hod the emotiona l stability needed for otr c rew training Well, they got some of the boys there,
Aft~r completion of our tests, for about four weeks, we leorned •hot pilots, to be good pilots, must forst be able to pock up rock$. We left class1hcot•~n with o bond ploying, ond 5,000 other eager beavers for compon1ons. h wos a short trip this time. We marched out one gate, across o m1lhory h ighway and through another gate ondd there
1 we were h was ovr home fof the neKt nine weeks and'
so to re ate, for many of us. thirteen wet?ks ' f At ~elbologht they told us they were going to seporote the men rorn t e ys We all managed to sroy-thot is, most of us did.
They sent us to classes in aircraft Identification naval 1dt nttfico4
tion, moth, physics (tha t 's the one that mode 1t thirteen weeks) and code (that helped o little too) They also nod o little course called physical training We coiled it many o ther things After n ine and for $0me of us thirteen weeks. we were o ff for primary
The oge·o ld fable of country club life took o jor11ng 1011 We found that the Army still hod o lot of outhorify, even at o civilian owned flying school. And to prove 1t, they gove us tours occos1onolly We learned here the lur>domentols o f flying, that 1f ... moved the stick ond rhe ruder to the left we would turn lefr. and vice-verso The sound of the motors seemed 1emfying. We gulped, gathered up all our spore courage ond set about leorning to fly A her opproximo tely eight hours they sta rted soloing us, and if you didn't know your instructo r; well, you'd swear he was our to get yov The idco, sending you up alone! We received 65 hours of flying t im" there; time we·11 never forget, for those were the first days, and we were breaking the chains tha t hod bound us to the earth
BASIC WAS ROUGH! ! We hod our first format ion flying there, and never did think we would leorn Just when we lhought we were catching °"'r we hod the required tome and hod to go on to something else oo, we got the first real ocrobot1cs Those wtre doy$ none of us wilf forget. There oten' r words to descnbe the wonderful feeling you get when you see the world go into a ll sorts of crazy motions and angles, and then right il setf just by the simple co~ ordinated movements of your hor>ds ond feet Basic ended, and then come the wonderful cry• " On to Advonud "
When we orrived at Advanced we thought we would hove things easy · just coast for nine weeks and hove a General, no less, come up Ond congrotufote us o n our wonderful accompl1shmen1, and pin the wings and bofs on us If that's the way 1t was once, well, then things hove changed We were rushN from one minute to the next. Always on the go and olwoys something to do, something thot must be done of you're to get through We hod our lorst long cross coun· tries, and really learned to l ly formation. We hod our forst night cross countries, search missions (and lots of t imes befo re It was over someone was lookin9 for you). Rendezvous ond intercept1ons-1~se were just some of the important phoses of fro1n1ng ~e rKe1ved here
So now we ore through with cadet troining--ond learning fhot we o re just beginning to learn to fly. As we went through these lost 16 months we sow friends come and go. We feel that we owe them o debt They wonted to fly, too, ond moyb~ by tryon~ to do both their shore- ond ours, we con make them o little hopp1er
