ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA

Since the Electric Light orchestra's debut album in 1972, the lnglish group led by guitar-ist, c0mposer, vocalist and songwriter Jeff Lynne, has been an innovating furce at every stepof their career.

Begun as an experimenkl attempt to use strings and some classical influences in thecontext of a rock and roll group, ELo has become one 0I the giants of today's music scene,both commercially and artistically.

With their n€w album "A New World Record," the group's lourth "gold" album in a row,coupled with their last tour leaturinq sell-0uts across the United States, ELo's superstarcredentials are beyond question.

"A New World Record," released in 0ctober of 1976, contains sone oI Lynne's mosloriginal ideas. 0n "Telephone Line," a song about a guy trying to call a girl and perpetuallygetting no answer. he used the sound trom an American phone system. Fecording inGermany, he taped a ringing phone from six thousand miles away, and lhen Tandy re-createdthe sound on the moog. 0n "Rockaria," a song about 8n opera sinqer trying to sing rock' heused a soDmno lrom the London 0pera. "She really got otf on hearing her voice 0n a rocktrack," says Lynne.other classical musicians have not been as involved.0n an earlier ELosession, a string section slopped playing right in the middle of a song, because the clock hadstruck the hour, and as union members, they were playing strictly according t0 the rulesAlso on the new album is "Do Ya." a re-make of the most popular hit Jeff had with The l\40vein the U.S. "l wanted t0 make it an ELo song," he says.

Unlike many olher English rock groups, ELo does not throw television sets out otwindows, make embarrassing scenes in public places or lose their tempers irrationally atperfect strangers. lf Lynne dislikes the term "classical rock." he certainly realizes he hascreated something far more progressive than most rock and roll ln a calegory all their own,the Electric Light 0rchestra continues to blaze trails rather than copy yesterday's heroesEven so, Lynne despairs that "We all have the same twenty chords to work with..."
