EMAIL TIPS Volume 89 January 2013 Perspectives
There are plenty of companies out there that provide training to ISO and ASNT standards. Full Spectrum Diagnostics is one of those companies. The difference is that our company’s insights come from active and ongoing diagnostics in the field. Full Spectrum Diagnostics specializes in the detection and resolution of natural frequency and resonance problems in industrial machinery applications. Our approach to solving problems spills over into our training materials. We know that the real world problems are seldom found in a textbook. Many times the best course of action is the process of elimination based on real empirical data and through asking the right questions.
We invite you to contact us and discuss how your training needs and our real-world perspectives can benefit you and your organization.
This Month’s Features:
Certification: ISO & ASNT
Certification: Training Hour Requirements
Real Data: An Unusual Low-Frequency Application

Another Look at the Cover:
The cover image shows a fabricated frame structure designed by a manufacturing OEM. Full Spectrum Diagnostics was asked to test a series of design prototypes and provide some ways to stiffen the structure without significantly adding to the cost, complexity, or bottom line. Not always an easy task.
In this case, several options were identified to increese resonance margins and reduced self-induced response.
CERTIFICATION TIP 1
The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) was the very first organization in the USA to be accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) according to ISO standards document 17024. The ASNT PdM Level III program for the Vibration Method is found under the umbrella of the NDT program
Full Spectrum Diagnostics is aligned with ASNT, offering Level I, Level II, and Level III vibration analysis courses to prepare candidates for ASNT PdM Level III certification. In addition, for those without aspirations to reach Level III certification, but desire additional training, we offer concentrated "specialty" courses that satisfy ASNT formal training hour requirements, as needed.
Since 2012, we have modified our examination procedures to comply with International Standards Organization (ISO) 18436-1 and 18436-2 guidelines. Our courses as they are applied to the ISO Categories are labeled as follows:
"Intro to Vibration Analysis" CAT I “Vibration Analysis Level I” CAT II “Vibration Analysis Level II” CAT III “Vibration Analysis Level IIIa CAT IV(a) “Vibration Analysis Level IIIb CAT IV(b)
Be aware that certification candidates need to sit for a "Closed Book” examination and achieve a passing grade of 75% or higher to be "ASNT" and/or "ISO" certified.
Our seminars encompass the Body of Knowledge topical recommended by the ASNT SNT-TC-1A Recommended Practice and ISO certification document 18436.
CERTIFICATION TIP 2
Certification is not only a matter of taking and passing an exam, but also attending formal training courses with a prerequisite number of hours. Full Spectrum Diagnostics offers specialized training course that emphasize topics covered in Vibration Analysis Level I and II courses, but in much greater detail. The hours spend attending these course can be applied to the minimum number of hours required for ASNT and ISO training.
MODAL & ODS ANALYSIS ……….. 24 hrs CONCENTRATED TIME WAVEFORM ANLAYSIS …… 16 hrs CONCENTRATED SPECTRUM ANLAYSIS …………… 16 hrs CONCENTRATED PHASE ANALYSIS ………………… 16 hrs CONCENTRATED ROLLING ELEMENT BEARING & GEAR ANLAYSIS ………………….. 16 hrs VIBRATION ANALYSIS for MOTOR SHOPS …………………… 24 hrs PRECISION BALANCING ………... 24 hrs
A full course load of Concentrated or Specialty courses can contribute up to 136 hours of formal training hour requirements!
REAL DATA: The Odd and Uncommon www.fullspec.net The data below in a Time Waveform format was collected on a Nuclear Power Plant Turbine deck and was suspected to be caused by turbulence in the main steam line and resonance amplification. The low frequency and intermittent nature of the response prohibited more conventional frequency spectra analysis. Literally dozens of measurements were collected at various frequency bands and resolutions. Most of these could not capture the nature of the response correctly.
It seems simple in hind sight, but the final data collection parameters eluded the analyst for quite a while. The actual response was easily “felt” by just standing on the deck. Note the low frequency and corresponding amplitudes. The Acceleration vs. Frequency Severity chart shows that the response is well within the “Very Rough” region. More like a “paint-shaker” than a 100 square foot slab of 12 inch thick concrete.
If the reader is more comfortable with a Velocity severity, the equivalent level would be nearly 5 inches per second (ips). One would expect a structure of this sort would transmit about 0.050 ips of vibration from adjacent sources. The level here is almost 100 time what would be expected. An odd measurement, indeed.
FHz = [1 / Period] 12.5 Hz = [1 / 0.08SEC ] 12.5 Hz x 60 = 750 CPM 1.667 Hz = [1 / 0.60SEC ] 1.667 Hz x 60 = 100 CPM
