Energy Resources: Renewable/Nonrenewable

Renewable resources: Resources that can be replaced in a relatively short period

of time.

Nonrenewable resource: Resources that exist in limited quantities and, once used, cannot be replaced

except over the course of millions of years.

Renewable Nonrenewable Definition: Resources tha t can be replaced in a relatively short period of time.

Definition: Resources tha t exist in limited quantities and, once used, canno t be replaced except ov er the course of millions of years.

Tragedy of the Commons• You are the head of a family. Every year you

may fish for as many as 4 fish.

Tragedy of the Commons

• Every year, all of the fish left in the pond reproduce, having 1 baby.

1. Def: Fossil Fuels are energy from once-living things. (coal, natural gas, and oil)

Fossil fuels are called hydrocarbons. Their energy is found in the bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms.

Where do fossil fuels come from?100-500 million years ago (in the time of the dinosaurs), organisms died…

… and were buried in lakes, swamps, or sea.

Where do fossil fuels come from?

Since no oxygen was present, these organisms were broken down in an anaerobic environment

… and eventually turned into fossil fuels.

COAL FORMATION

STOP AND THINK: Fossil fuels are unevenly distributed around the world

What % of the world’s oil does Iraq have?

What % of the world’s natural gas does the U.S. have?

Why do you think some countries have more fossil fuels than others?

3.0%9.6%

How do we use the energy from fossil fuels?

We BURN them! This releases CO2 into the air.

The 3 types of fossil fuels:

3. Natural gas

1. coal

2. oil

Pros• Easy to use (ex.

Filling up your gas tank)

• Cheap right now compared to other energy sources based on the tools we have to collect them right now.

Cons• Running out therefore

prices are constantly increasing

• Negative effect on the environment.

• Release toxic gases when burned. (Ex. CO2)

• May be related to global warming/climate change

Fossil Fuel Pros/Cons

1. Coal

• 93%of coal in US is used to generate electricity

• Mined in US sites - used to make steel and paper

2. Oil

• Oil is used to make gasoline, jet fuel and propane

• Also used to make crayons, CDs, tired and deodorant

3. Natural Gas

• Used for heating and as a fuel in homes and industrial buildings

• Many water heaters are natural gas now, as are gas stoves

• Burns more cleanly than any other fossil fuel

Usage of fossil fuelsGlobal consumption of fossil fuels is at its highest level ever.

How much does the average American use compared to the average Indian? The average American uses 100 times more energy than the average person in India.

When in your day do you use

fossil fuels?

• Knowing what you do about fossil fuels… do you think they are renewable or nonrenewable?

• Fossil fuels make air pollution when burned and can cause acid rain.

A day without Energy

• Go through a day in your life and explain how you would live without energy.

• Start when you wake up and follow your day until you go to bed.

• Include: how you would cook your food, how would you clean yourself? What would you do for fun?
