INFORMATION, INSPIRATION & INITIATIVE Last year the three events of Vaasa Energy-Week assembled nearly 1,400 satisfi ed visitors from the Vaasa region, elsewhere in Finland and abroad. This exceeded the attendance targets by almost 40 percent. This year will establish the success story of Vaasa EnergyWeek, which has now been expanded to include no less than fi ve main events.

In the Vaasa region, energy is always on the agenda, but especially so during this week. Last year, the success of Vaasa EnergyWeek was mainly due to the energy sector top names featured on our list of speakers. This is a tradition we will cherish.

Lately, wind power has been in the spotlight and has taken great steps forward nationally. EnergyWeek aims at speeding up this process further by enlightening the subject from many diff erent angles.

This year we have also included events to represent new areas, such as Energy

Fossil fuels are still running our globe and without oil and coal the world would simply stop. The earth’s population, people’s consumption and with it the need for energy and raw materials keep growing and this causes serious challenges for the battle against climate change, increases environmental emissions and causes inadequacy of fossil fuels.

It has been estimated that unless the share of nuclear power and the carbon capture and storage technologies grow significantly in the field of energy production by 2050, 80% of the world’s energy at that

time will have to be produced by renewable sources of energy. Energy efficiency will also have to be improved considerably. The most important factor driving us in this direction is the ever toughening emissions targets. Clean energy technology and energy efficiency are the fastest growing fields of cleantech and represent the solution to these challenges.

The cleantech business is one of Finland’s economic focus areas in the future. The government has set the target of making Finland one of the world’s leading countries in cleantech know-how. In 2011, the combined

turnover of Finnish cleantech companies was over EUR 20 billion, of which export accounted for EUR 12 billion. The turnover grew from the previous year by more than 10%, which is an excellent achievement in the current economic situation, where growth in general is almost non-existent.

Finland aims to raise the turnover of its cleantech business to EUR 50 billion by 2020 and to increase exports in this field to more than EUR 37 billion. This would result in more

than 40,000 new jobs in the field. The majority of the growth will be generated by the solutions in clean energy and energy efficiency. Finland is already known as one of the leading countries in the world in clean

technology, and its special strengths are clean and efficient technologies within energy production, consumption and distribution.

The Vaasa region plays a key role in our government’s target of making Finland a leading provider of cleantech. Vaasa is already the location for the most important energy technology cluster in the Nordic countries, employing more than 10,000 people. Vaasa’s target is to double this number by 2020, which would make its share of the whole country’s target for jobs in clean technology even more significant. More than

70% of the products and services provided by the regional energy cluster are exported.

I think it is very important that the energy solutions developed in our country also have the opportunity to enter the international market and succeed there. The Finnish home market is small and growth can only be achieved through the growing international market. Growth in exports not only creates new jobs, but also helps to improve our trade balance. Moreover, the development of clean energy technologies will provide solutions for global environmental challenges. In purposefully developing its energy cluster, Vaasa has made the right decision both for the Finnish economy and the state of our global environment.

ENERGY BOOSTS THE ECONOMY OF FINLANDLately, the fields of energy and environmental technology have been considered as the most potential successors to the current giants of Finnish exports, the mobile technology and forest industries. New energy investments are being made globally. In Europe alone MEUR 640 will be invested in improving energy efficiency over the next eight years.

EnergyVaasa, the centre of energy technology in the Vaasa region, is responsible for as much as a third of Finland’s energy technology exports. EnergyVaasa’s target is to double the number of its collective staff by 2020 to 20,000 experts. This growth target is based on the market conditions and the companies’ own appreciation. The enterprises have already tripled their research and product development investments between 2005 and 2011.

BORN GLOBALSmall and open economies like Finland need enterprises that work well in the international market. WE Tech Solutions and Arcteq Relays are part of the Vaasa region’s energy technology cluster and are excellent examples of companies that were created for the global market from the very beginning.

Specialising in improving the energy efficiency of ships, WE Tech Solutions has its roots in Wärtsilä, whereas the founders

of Arcteq Relays acquired their experience working for a protection relay manufacturer in the Vaasa region.

The products produced by WE Tech Solutions to improve the energy efficiency of ships are based on frequency converter technology. The company have already implemented a similar solution for wind power plants.

– With our solution, a ship’s fuel consumption can be reduced by 5–15 per cent, bringing both extensive savings and decreased emissions for maritime transport, says the Managing Director Mårten Storbacka.

Arcteq Relays designed a family of protection relay products for various needs.

– We have created frequency-independent protection relays that are ideal for wind power plants, among other applications. We have also patented some of our technological solutions, says Managing Director Juha Arvola, under whose navigation the company is now trading in 25 countries.

When discussing born globals, people often emphasise the importance of technological innovations, but according to Johanna Hallbäck, teacher at the University of Vaasa’s Department of Marketing, they are not the only significant factor contributing to a company’s success.

– Small businesses that succeed in the international market are usually very good at adjusting their strategy to the prevailing conditions.

GETTING THE GEAR TO COMMUNICATEWhile relays observe the IEC 61850 Standard on data transfer, their ability to work together is still far from guaranteed. A ground-breaking research by Vaasa-based experts will vitally reduce the problems between different manufacturers’ protection products and consequently simplify the data transfer and communication needed in substation automation, decentralised energy production and smart grids.

– In our DEMVE Project, we gather protection relays from different manufacturers into substation simulators and study how they should be programmed to function together seamlessly, says Jari Koski, lecturer at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences.

The training created during the project will be marketed and implemented by Vaasa Energy Institute for any interested parties from all over the world.

15 000 JOBS FROM WIND POWERWind power farms bring employment to the area both during their construction and their subsequent maintenance. The 2,500 MW worth of wind power construction planned for the next few years in Finland translates as 12,000–20,000 person-work years.

The stalemate due to the recession is now becoming unravelled and many of the planned projects are proceeding. In October 2012, there were wind power plant projects totalling 8,900 MW under way in this country. Of these, roughly 3,000 MW were offshore projects.

The share of domestic work in Finnish wind power manufacturers’ products is great. These products utilise a great deal of know-how produced in Finland in the fields of metal, carbon fibre, fiberglass, hydraulics, electrotechnology, automation technology, electronics and programming.

Mervento’s wind power plant in Vaasa, for example, uses a lot of the company’s own design.

– This increases the power plant’s degree of domestic origin to 75 per cent, says Jarmo Saaranen, the company’s CEO.

PASSIVITY THAT PAYS OFFIncreasing the energy efficiency of buildings decreases the carbon footprint, especially here in the north, where a large part of the energy consumed is spent on heating. For the present, Finland is slightly behind its Nordic neighbours in issues concerning energy efficiency, but we are working hard to catch up.

– Finnish know-how in the production of house shells that endure all kinds of weather conditions is top class. We are also forerunners in innovations, such as ventilation that is equipped to recover heat. In terms of legislation, the energy management regulations issued last summer – which now focus on a building’s total annual energy consumption instead of its heat loss, as before – took us in one fell swoop to the forefront of development, says Kimmo Lylykangas.

A passive house is a building that consumes very little energy and fulfils the given key ratios regarding the requirements for heating energy, total primary energy and air tightness. A passive house is not a building concept or standard, but a voluntarily set target for efficiency. In a passive house, the low energy requirement is achieved through the characteristics of the shell of the house and the efficient recovery of heat from ventilation.

STRONG CANDIDATE FOR CLIMATE ACTION OF THE YEAR 2012At the end of 2012, district heat production in Vaasa made a significant turnabout in its energy focus when the world’s largest biomass gasification plant at Vaskiluodon Voima Oy and Westenergy Oy’s waste incineration plant, that turns the waste of some 400,000 people into district heat and electricity, were completed.

The partners Vaasan Sähkö, Vaskiluodon Voima and Westenergy are participating in the competition Climate Action of the Year 2012 with their district heat production project. The winner will be announced at the climate seminar of the Finnish Energy Industries association in May 2013. Vaasa’s climate action follows along the lines of Finland’s climate policies and the national waste plan put in place by the Ministry of the Environment and exceeds its own share of the national targets for emission reductions with flying colours.

By adding up the sum of carbon dioxide emissions generated by the joint production of electricity and district heat in the Vaasa region and the decrease in the methane discharge of the region’s dumps, the total effect of the region’s reduction in carbon dioxide emissions amounts to approximately 525,000 tonnes per year. This is almost one per cent of all of Finland’s yearly carbon dioxide emissions and 1.5 per cent of the emissions within emissions trading, and corresponds to the annual carbon dioxide emissions of roughly 175,000 cars.

The dynamics of the global energy and shipping markets are undergoing profound change. EPV Energy Ltd is a versatile energy company with 60 years’ experience. It procures or produces around five percent of all the electricity used in Finland.

EPV Energy has determined to focus on emission-free energy generation and the company has initiated extensive bio, wind and nuclear energy programmes, with the aim of increasing the generation of renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and replacing fossil fuels with domestic alternatives.

Vaskiluodon Voima Oy, a subsidiary owned equally by EPV Energy and Pohjolan Voima Oy, produces electricity and district heating both in Vaasa and Seinäjoki. Last December, Vaskiluodon Voima took a giant leap towards utilizing domestic biofuels and cutting carbon dioxide emissions when they introduced biomass gasification at the Vaasa power plant. The new gasification plant enables the company to replace around one third of the coal consumed with biofuels, mostly forest chips and by-products of the sawmill industry.

The Vaasa power plant’s combined heat and power production was quite environmental friendly already, and now the world’s biggest gasification plant provides Vaasa residents with even more environmentally friendly district heating. Using domestic biomass instead of coal cuts carbon dioxide emission by 230,000 tons per year, corresponding to the annual emissions of 70,000 cars.

The gasification plant has also a positive impact on the economy of the region. It is calculated that around EUR 15 million per year is injected into the regional economy through the procurement of biofuels. Previously, this amount of money would have been used to purchase foreign coal and carbon dioxide emission rights. The gasification plant, together with the procurement of biofuels, creates up to 400 new jobs in the region.

In line with its company strategy, EPV Energy is also active in several wind power projects through its four subsidiaries which concentrate on wind power. For example, Finland’s most energy efficient wind power park, Puuska in Tornio, is mostly owned by EPV through its subsidiary Rajakiiri.

Even if processes for land area planning and construction permits have been slightly slow in Finland, some of EPV’s proposed wind power projects have recently been successful and given the green light. For example, in Ostrobothnia there are four wind park areas which have passed the land area planning process, and now EPV can proceed to the construction phase. It will be possible to build approximately 100 wind turbines in these areas.

Rising energy prices and growing concern for the environment has made energy efficiency one of the most important issues in the public debate. Improving energy efficiency is the fastest, cheapest and most sustainable way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to ensure the availability of energy.

ABB is a leading power and automation technology company with about 145,000 employees in around 100 countries and on every continent. In Finland, there are nearly 7000 people working for ABB in more than 30 locations, factories being located in Helsinki, Vaasa and Porvoo.

ABB’s solutions result in more effective energy production, transmission, distribution and use, and contribute to taking on the energy and climate challenge. Increasing energy efficiency is the most significant, fastest and most sustainable way of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

ABB is a technology leader company and one of the strongest product developers in Finland. In 2012, ABB Finland invested

The energy saving potential in industrial motors systems alone is enormous, because industry consumes more than 40% of the world’s electricity, and electric motors represent over 60% of this consumption. ABB’s high efficiency motors, driven by drives, have a potential to provide huge savings:

The installed base of ABB drives saved about 310 TWh in 2011, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 75 million households in the EU-27. If that 310 TWh had been generated by fossil fuel-powered electricity plants, in 2011 ABB drives would have reduced CO2 emissions by about 260 million tonnes, corresponding to the annual emissions of more than 65 million cars.

Nine percent of the electricity produced in the world is lost during transmission and distribution. Also, electricity production consumes a lot of energy. Electricity production, transmission and distribution can be improved with the best available technology provided by ABB.

The transport sector represents 23 percent of overall global CO2 emissions generated by fossil fuel combustion, and is expected to grow by approximately 40 percent between 2007 and 2030. ABB technology can help lower energy losses and reduce CO2 emissions in transportation both on land and at sea.

Commercial and residential buildings account for about 40 percent of global end-user energy demand, mainly for heating, cooling and powering electric appliances. ABB’s automation technologies for buildings have the potential to achieve energy savings of up to 50 percent.

Solar power inverters, developed and manufactured by ABB Drives in Pitäjänmäki, change the DC electricity generated by solar power to AC, at the appropriate voltage to transfer it to the grid. At the Pitäjänmäki plant, solar power is exploited to charge the forklifts and cut the consumption peaks.

The need to reduce the level of CO2 emissions generated by fossil fuels is making wind an increasingly attractive, free and renewable source of energy. Generating power from wind is, in principle, a simple process, but in practice requires state-of-the-art technology. Vacon offers over ten years’ experience, extensive knowledge and the necessary technology to convert renewable sources into electrical power.

Vacon provides mass-produced regenerative power converters and inverters that can be used by system integrators and wind turbine manufacturers in various wind turbine applications, as well as in testing and development systems.

The VACON 8000 Wind is a complete power converter, which is designed for use in doubly-fed induction generators. VACON NXP air and liquid-cooled inverter modules are available for both full power and doubly-fed converters. They are also used in generator and power converter test systems, while VACON NXP drive modules are used for yaw, pitch and auxiliary controls. The applications and control functions that we offer are all designed according to our customers’ specific needs. Generator load control, power conversion control, yaw control, pitch control – these are just some of the features which can be provided as required. We also have the expertise necessary to build grid-code compliance functions, low voltage ride-through microgrid functionality and fieldbus interfaces for wind turbine control systems.

The Leinolat Group is a corporation consisting of six companies offering clients a large variety of service systems in the field of metal. The corporation has extensive experience and vast professional know-how in air conditioning solutions, metal products and related services.

For decades, our main customers have been large Finnish companies in the energy technology industry, and through them approximately 60% of our production has gone to their export market. Lately, the Leinolat Group has been actively seeking new partners also from outside Finland.

Our main target groups abroad are very similar to our customers in Finland. We negotiate mainly with energy technology companies, such as those planning nuclear, wind, gas and diesel power plants.

“Years of close cooperation with companies who act globally have taught us a great deal about how to operate with global customers. Our main domestic customers have also encouraged us to enter the export markets on our own”, explains Managing Director Raimo Leinola from the Leinolat Group.

“We have put a lot of effort, for example, into improving our quality system, and some of our negotiating partners have already been here to audit our activities. The first orders from customers in other Nordic Countries and Western Europe have arrived and we are happy to fulfill them”, Leinola continues.

Raimo Leinola knows that entering international markets requires long-term planning and good references.

The United Kingdom government is actively developing new energy sources as part of its Renewable Energy Roadmap. The UK is currently still highly dependent on fossil fuels, which means there will be major changes in the energy system in the near future – and this means business for many energy technology companies and investors.

“By 2020, the UK needs to replace some 25% of its generating capacity, which probably represents some EUR 125 billion investments in new energy generating plant and distribution systems. It is around double the investment we saw in the previous ten years”, says James Beal, Renewable Energy Specialist from UK Trade and Investment, which is the national government agency that offers free support and independent advice to foreign companies looking to invest or locate in the UK.

“We have several market mechanisms that support the generation of renewable heat, electricity and transport fuel. We have, despite the financial challenges, also set up the Green Investment bank with EUR 3.4 billion of public funds and, recently, Government has gone out to tender to forward purchase its electricity from renewable sources”, Mr Beal continues.

According to Mr Beal, the UK has significant capacity, capability and investment for renewable energy, but demand on the market is so huge that they simply need more resources to implement the change. That’s why Mr Beal goes around the world with the message of opportunity that the UK market presents its essential free energy market. 18 March 2013, Vaasa City Hall, 12.00-17.00Since 2005 the Energy and Environment Seminar has been an annual event on energy topics of current interest for decision-makers, business representatives and researchers.

In 2013, the seminar focuses on future energy production, keeping environmental aspects in mind.

The target of the seminar is to initiate the interaction between public and private decision-makers, offering an interesting mix of speakers representing both parties. Minister of Economic Affairs Mr Jan Vapaavuori is the official patron of the event.

The presentations will be held mainly in Finnish, partly in Swedish and English, with no simultaneous interpretation. The seminar is free of charge.

The seminar is organized by Technology Centre Oy Merinova Ab/Energy Technology Cluster Programme (OSKE), Ostrobothnia Chamber of Commerce, Regional Council of Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia ELY Centre and Southern Ostrobothnia ELY Centre.

Christian Kjaer is EWEA’s Chief Executive Offi cer. He joined EWEA in 2002 working with the developing policy. Lauri Tarasti was the Secretary General at the Ministry of the Environment 1983–1994 and the Justice of the Supreme Administrative Court 1994–2007. He is a Licentiate in Laws. Tarasti has been an expert and liquidator e.g. in matters regarding the elections and in cases of athlete doping. Tarasti’s survey of wind power construction in Finland was published last year.

Teijo KärnäWind power is one of the fastest growing segments of the energy industry with more than 40 GW of new installations per year. The wind segment is now maturing from a pioneering phase towards a more industrialized business. This change also aff ects the key characteristics in the wind business. Teijo Kärnä will present some of the key issues that global players in the wind business need to consider.

This time the main topics are engine technology, biofuels & geoenergy and smart grids & microgrids.

ENGINE TECHNOLOGYDr Seppo Niemi from the University of Vaasa will serve as Chairman for this session. The session concentrates on engine driven power production from modern gas and diesel fuelled systems. Efficient and reliable gas and diesel engines integrate well with networks including wind and solar power since the engines can be started and respond to load and production changes quickly, thus balancing highly fluctuating wind power. Modern engines are able to operate on several renewable fuels. Many farmers and companies are also willing to operate their non-road machines on new clean and renewable fuels. In this session, some highlights of various engine and fuel technologies will be presented and discussed.

Renewable energy and distributed energy production is expected to become more important in the future. In this session the focus is on storage and production of biofuels and the different forms of geoenergy. Important sources for biofuels are green biomass and different organic waste materials. Geoenergy is the most popular heating method in new residential areas in Finland.

SMART GRIDS AND MICROGRIDSDr Kimmo Kauhaniemi from the University of Vaasa will chair the smart grids and microgrids session. The demand for better power quality and easy integration of local energy sources are the challenges of future power systems. Modern information and communication technologies enable a wide variety of new solutions that are being researched in many smart grid projects around the world. In this session some highlights will be given from national and international perspectives. The session presentations also focus on microgrids, which are independent, local self-sufficient (small scale) grids.

During the afternoon there will also be presentations on the wind measurements at a wind farm, on methods to improve wind resource assessment and the experiences from installing a LIDAR instrument on a wind turbine.

Josep M. GuerreroProf. Josep M. Guerrero works at Aalborg University, Denmark, where he is responsible for microgrid-related activities. Previously he was an Associate Professor at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, where he taught courses on digital signal processing, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), microprocessors, and renewable energy. His current research interests include the control of AC and DC microgrids.

José AcuñaDr José Acuña represents the Royal University of Technology, Sweden. He has a long experience from studying geoenergy: methods for reducing the temperature difference between the circulating fluid and the borehole wall, and testing borehole heat exchangers and distributed thermal response.

Mohammed AmmarMr Mohamed Ammar is the General Manager at STEG-IS, Tunisia. STEG-IS is a subsidiary of the Tunisian national energy company STEG (Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas), focusing on international service business related to energy infrastructures. Mr Ammar will provide a view on smart grids from the North African perspective.

Michaela HissaMichaela Hissa is studying at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Energy Technology at the University of Vaasa. In 2012 Hissa worked as Research Assistant at the University of Vaasa. The subject of her Master’s thesis was “High-speed engine results with various renewable fuels”. Hissa has working experience from substation automation systems at ABB, assembling of internal combustion engines at Wärtsilä and assembling of AC drives at Vacon.

Jani ValtariMr Jani Valtari from ABB is the Program Manager of the Smart Grids and Energy Markets (SGEM) research program coordinated by CLEEN Oy. Mr Valtari has an excellent view on smart grid-related research activities in Finland.

Pekka HjonDevelopment Engineer, AGCO Power Pekka Hjon (age 57) graduated from Helsinki University of Technology in 1981. He has worked in the engine laboratory of the Linnavuori engine factory (now AGCO Power) since 1985. AGCO Power designs and manufactures diesel engines mainly for agricultural applications. Pekka Hjon has participated in the calibration and testing of engine applications over the last decade. Today, his main tasks are developing engines for emerging markets and alternative fuels. Since 2007, Pekka Hjon is part-time lecturer at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

Margareta WihersaariProf. Margareta Wihersaari represents Åbo Akademi University, Finland. At the moment she is working in the Vaasa unit. Earlier she has been in contact with the University of Jyväskylä and VTT. Currently, her primary tasks are to organize the teaching in energy technology (closely related to chemistry) and network with local industry. Her special interests are solid biofuels and storage.

Kendall RutledgeKendall Rutledge currently supports wind resource research in Finland with Novia University of Applied Sciences and aerosol/cloud interaction research with NASA in the United States. His work as a research contractor supporting NASA projects began in the mid-80s and involved rotorcraft community noise and aircraft acoustics. For the past fifteen years he has worked to provide surface observations of radiation and optical properties of the atmosphere in the marine environment in support of NASA’s Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System project.

Peter Clive Renewable Energy Consultant, SgurrEnergy. Peter has had a central role in the development of the Galion LiDAR, which enables wind to be surveyed with previously unavailable detail and precision. Peter also pioneered in the introduction of statistical techniques such as Response Deficit Analysis into wind turbine performance assessment and SCADA data analysis, facilitating effective O&M triage. His interests include innovative non-linear resource assessment techniques, such as Modified Weibull Scaling, that minimize project uncertainty and boost project value.

Carlo Di NapoliM.Sc. Carlo Di Napoli currently works as Performance and Measurement Services project manager at Pöyry Finland Oy. The projects deal with industrial noise and acoustics. He has a background in the energy production field, especially in performance and guarantee testing of conventional steam turbines and modern gas turbines. He is dedicated to wind turbine noise related issues and has published several national and international publications on the subject.

Ari Soininen Development Manager (M. Sc.), EPV Energia Oy. Ari Soininen handles wind farm development including wind measurement, the use of wind data and co-ordination of prognoses. He has five years’ experience from the wind sector and more than ten years from the energy sector.

Jonathan ButlerCDT Wind Energy Systems, University of Strathclyde. Master in Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics Jonathan Butler furthered his studies at the EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Wind Energy Systems. His work is focused on the use of remote sensing LiDAR devices in the wind energy environment, specifically on the comparison of measured data to CFD simulations of active wind farms. The direct comparison of the two will allow for improvements in LiDAR deployment planning and analysis as well as improvements in the CFD methodologies and accuracy.

Sara Fogelström Wind Power Coordinator at Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Energy and Environment, Division of Electric power Engineering. Sara Fogelström works as the coordinator for the Swedish Wind Power Technology Centre (SWTPC). SWPTC is hosted by Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. Before starting at SWPTC she was a project manager in developing wind farms.
