MOSAIC’s Five W’s Investigation
Who? Is there a specific person or persons regularly experiencing
the behavior and are they inadvertently contributing?
Why? Use their past history of likes, dislikes, habits and other personal
information to narrow down what is causing the behavior.
“Research shows that when a person
with dementia is engaged one-to-one in
an activity that is meaningful to them,
at least ten minutes two times a day,
their behavior stabilizes.” -
-Christine Kovach, Researcher Serial Trial Method

MOSAIC Approach, Technique & Engagement
Aggression, Determined and Sundowning • Approach calmly
• Use their name and look directly at them until you get acknowledgement
• Speak in a soft voice so they have to strain to hear you
• Discreetly mirror the person’s body language and guide to calm
• Tell the person that you can see they are upset, listen to their response,
validate their feelings, reassure them and give them control of something
• Decrease stimuli in the environment and give them space
• Give them something safe, personal, non-breakable to hold
• Good guy, bad guy technique
