The legend of Kallisto and the Great Bear stars

Kallisto had been one of the nymphs. She lived in the forests and liked hunting very much. She was very beautiful and soon she attracted Zeus’ attention.

In a short time Kallisto got pregnant and after 9 months she gave birth to a boy, Arkas.

Hera who was Zeus’ wife of course got very angry and jealous when she learnt that her husband, Zeus’, made a kid with another woman. So, she decided to punish

Kallisto.Hera transformed Kallisto into a beard. Kallisto’s son was raised up by himself.

Years passed and one day Arkas decided to go hunting. In the forest Arkas saw a big bear. He had no idea that this bear had been his mother. He got so scared that tried to

kill the bear. Zeus’ felt pity on both the mother and the son…

Zeus transformed Kallisto and Arkas into stars in order to protect them from Hera. Even now if you look at the sky in the night you will see Kallisto’s stars in the shape of a

Great Bear and Arkas’ stars into a Little bear.
