1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Being one of the 81 cities of Turkey, Mersin is located in the Mediterranean Region of
Southern Turkey. The population is 1.745.221 according to the 2015 census and it has
approximately 16 thousand square kilometres surface area.
Mersin has made important contributions with its own dynamics to the progress that has
been made in Turkey in every field recently. Initiatives are seen in every area. It has an
important potential in tourism as well as commerce and economics.
Providing important richness to the different cultures that it hosted; today, Mersin has
come through the second fastest urbanization process. Development of Mersin continues
at a great pace with its modern port, free zone and all the commercial and industrial
organizations, carrying their own unique values. With large numbers of historical sites, a
321 kilometres coastal strip, its natural green environment with citrus gardens smelling
beautiful in each different season and deep rooted cultural events, the city provides
potentially important contributions to the culture and tourism of Turkey.
History
Tırmıl Hill in the east and the Yumuktepe Mounds in the west mark the boundaries of the
city centre. These mounds indicate that there were settlements in this area long before
the establishment of Mersin in Neolithic and Chacaloitic periods.
The known history of this region is connected to Luvi, Kizzuwatna, Hittite, Assyrians and the
Kingdom of Babylon. The region was dominated by Hittite, Urartu, Assur, Babylon, Lydia,
Persian, Seleukos and the Roman Empire.

In the period from 7th century to the Ottoman conquest; Arabians, Abase, Egyptian
Tulunoğulları, Seljuklians, Mogols, the Crusaders, Memluks, Ramazanoğulları and
Karamanoğulları controlled part of the region.
From the 16th century onwards, Mersin and its neighbourhood became part of the
Ottoman land.
Geographic Characteristics
Mersin is located in one of the most fertile lands of Turkey, in the Çukurova Region that
stands out with features such as green plains, wide valleys, blue rivers, lakes, mountain
chains, historical caves and also contains different physical structure.
A great many of the plains, valleys, rivers, lakes, mountains, canals, caves and spring
water resources are located within the boundaries of the city.
Most of the Plains found in Mersin and in its surrounding areas are largely backed by Toros
Mountains. They were formed by the sediment carried by the streams which varied
depending on the slope gradient. These areas are convenient for agriculture and lie
parallel to the mountains from the border of Mersin - Adana to Silifke.
Mersin also has the potential to provide major contributions to the region's tourism with its
own historical and cultural richness including its caves. Cennet Çöküğü Cave is a
favourite place for domestic and foreign tourists to visit. The Church of Virgin Mary is also
in Cennet Çöküğü Cave and it is important for religious tourism. The Cehennem Cavern
located in the area is 130 meters deep, and was created by chemical erosion which
formed the underground creeks.
The "Asthma Cave" is formed by silica and mineral tunnels which are 200 metres in length
and are decorated with very interesting stalactites and stalagmites. The cave reaches
85% humidity in summer and 95% humidity in winter.
"Seven Sleepers of Ephesus (Ashab - ı Kehf)" is also in Mersin and considered a sacred
place for the Christians and the Muslims.
