Evaluation Question 2
Analysis in terms of ‘effectiveness’
PosterReasons For Effectiveness
• Clear connotation for the focus of the documentary; the police (from the policeman), and Leicester (the Clock Tower)
• Additionally, the ‘blurry’ background of the poster is that of Leicester at night. This helps create the connotation of a focus on Leicester Nightlife (with the blurriness in reference to ‘drinking’, which alludes to the drinking done). The fact that the policeman is clear connotes that in this ‘drunk’ state-of-mind, the police are there to provide clear assistance. The white outline helps connote this, as it can be associated with a ‘guiding light’ as the Police try to help people enjoy the nightlife, but ensure no one causes trouble
• The brands are clearly shown on the right, and clearly show the companies associated with the product
• Clear Broadcast Details
HOWEVER • The editing of the ‘spires’ on
the Clock Tower looks a little ‘chiselled’
Radio TrailerReasons For Effectiveness
HOWEVER• A clearer connection to ‘One Leicester’
could have been made• The interview could have been reduced
slightly, or had someone else being officially interviewed to add diversity
• Use of vox-pops to get a diverse opinion from the people in Leicester (visitors or occupants)
• Clear connection to ‘Channel Four’ and Tunnel House Productions
• Use of official interview provides a ‘professional opinion’ on Leicester as a whole, from the viewpoint of a Senior Police Officer
• Broadcast Details clearly issued at end of trailer (conventional)
• Unconventional way of having the title placed in the middle of the trailer, before ‘documented’ audio which is included in the final product
Main ProductReasons For Effectiveness• Clearly puts forward a representation
of Leicester Nightlife, and how the police help keep the public safe
• Interviews shot well, with good quality sound (medium-close up)
• Variety of footage; in Leicester during day and night, in nightclubs during night-time + areas where Police help the citizens outside of what people expect of them (Safe and Sound), and a variety of shot-types to capture the Leicester Nightlife
However • Could have interviewed some bouncers in the
nightlife• Could have used more text to bring across the
‘informing’ of the audience• Could have used a day-to-night time lapse• Could have done with some of the clips ‘faded’
into the background of other clips being separate
