• GDA 2020

• Australia sits on a fast moving tectonic plate and the GDA94

coordinates used to locate features move along with that plate.

• Since GDA94 datum was defined, Australia has moved about

1.5 metres and so these positions are now more than 1.5

metres different to the International Terrestrial Reference

Frame (ITRF) coordinates used by Global Navigation Satellite

Systems, such as GPS.

• By 2020 this difference will be approximately 1.8 metres.

Short term issues – GDA2020

• Two national spatial reference frames will be developed.

• Firstly, there will be a datum that is fixed to the Australian

continent, where coordinates do not change with time.

• The second will be a reference frame that will allow locations of

points and their movement over time to be modelled,

accommodating coordinates that can change over time.

• To assist in the transition to a modern national datum, a two-

stage approach is planned with Stage 1 implementation

commencing1 January 2017 and Stage 2 nominally

concluding 1 January 2023

Short term issues – GDA2020

• On 1 January 2017 the transformation products

(GDA94 ⇔ GDA2020), tools, support documentation

and education resources will be available, so that users

are able to manage data on the GDA2020 datum.

• Under Stage 1, the practical adoption of GDA2020 as

the operational datum by Australian jurisdictions will

occur after January 2017. This transition will involve:

• Survey control (traditional ground and CORS) will have

coordinates readily publicly available in GDA2020. e.g.

be the “default values” in survey control databases.
