Experience Carmel River is a vibrant,community-based program thatwill saeguard the Carmel River into

the uture. Trough the eforts o Te Big Sur Land rust and its key partners, a number o the program’simportant goals have been reached.One important milestone is theopening in Fall 2011 o the SouthBank rail, which now ofers localcommunities the opportunity toreconnect to the Carmel River andto Palo Corona Regional Park,one o the region’s most iconiclandscapes.

Part o the Land rust’s strategiccommitment to build long-term

support or the river’s protectionand restoration, the South Bank rail begins at Rancho San CarlosRoad and heads 1.5 miles westto the boundary o Palo CoronaRegional Park. his beautiully scenic trail, open to everyone,begins on a private arm road,then meanders o the road tomeet the river beore gently climbing onto pasture land whereit meets the boundary o PaloCorona Regional Park.

SOUTH BANK TRAIL ETIQUETTE

Te Carmel River is a specialenvironment that provides vitalhabitat or a diversity o plantsand animals, as well as a place orpeople to connect with nature.As you enjoy the trail, please bemindul and respectul o thenatural wonders around you andollow these important steps.Well-mannered dogs are welcomeon the South Bank rail; however

dogs must be leashed at all timesand you are responsible to pick upand dispose o their waste. Horsesare not allowed on the South Bank rail. Stay on the public paved trailat all times. Pedestrians and cyclistsshare the trail, so please be awareo others. Leave no trace: pack itin, pack it out. You are responsibleor your own trash. Use the SouthBank rail at your own risk.

CONNECTING WITH PALOCORONA REGIONAL PARK 

No permit is required to use theSouth Bank rail; however a daily permit is required to pass throughthe trail’s west gate into PaloCorona Regional Park. o request apermit, contact Monterey PeninsulaRegional Park at (831) 372-3196, orat www.mprpd.org. Please note thatPalo Corona Regional Park is opendawn to dusk and that no dogs,horses or bicycles are allowed insidethe park. A bike rack is provided

at the terminus o the South Bank rail so that those entering the park can saely leave their bikes behindor later pick up.

NEXT STEPS

Experience Carmel River hasattracted growing attention romproperty owners along the river.As we advance in our goals, theLand rust looks orward tocontinuing our work with locallandowners and communities toplan or extending access to andenjoyment o the river. Looking

into the uture, the Land rustwill work with its partners to planor and develop a permanent,community-supportedpartnership—the CarmelRiver rust—that will ocuson long-term unding supportand capacity or implementingprojects and programs.
