If we can, our other question is, "At what rate or number of hours a day can we run it?".

As you know, the chloride reading is pretty high. Perhaps you would want to check with Mr. Daniel Lum on this as we may have to run We II "B" about 16 hours a day.

ESTIMATED MAXIMUM DAY DEMAND IN NORTH KONA WITH PRESENT ZONING (From DWS, Hawaii)

PRESENT CAPACITY AT KAHALUU

Well "A" 300 gpm = 0.432 MGD Well "B" 300 gpm = 0.432 Well "c" 700 gpm = 1.008

Total capacity = 1.872 MGD Safe capacity with standby = 0.862 MGD

DEVELOPMENT PLANS

To meet the anticipated growing demands of the area a 1000 gpm pumping unit will be installed in the proposed Well "D" and the existing 300 gpm pumping unit in Well "A" will be replaced by a 700 gpm unit. The capacity will then. be:

Well "A" 700 gpm = 1.008 MGD Well "B" 300 gpm = 0.432 Well "c" 700 gpm = 1.008 Well "D" 1000 gpm = 1.440

Total capacity = 3.888 MGD Safe capacity with standby = 2.448 MGD

If necessary this capacity can be further·increased in the future by replacing the 300 gpm pumping unit in Well "B" by a 700 gpm pump increasing the total capacity to 4.464 MGD or a safe capacity with standby to 3.456 MGD.

These wells should satisfy the anticipated demands until the proposed inclined shaft is constructed. The proposed shaft has a potential of developing 7.5 MGD.

To obtain the highest possible efficiency a 12-inch pump should be installed in Well "D". The 12-inch pump with extra thick casting for the high head required is approximately 12-1/8 inches. The AWWA Standard for Deep Wells lists casing diameters as follows:

SUMMARY

With the completion of Job No. 8-HW-37, Drilling of Well "D" and replacement of pump in Well "A", scheduled for January 1971, the total source capacity at the Kahaluu Well source will be 3.888 MGD with a safe capacity of 2.448 MGD. Plans for the proposed shaft will commence in April and is scheduled for completion in early 1973.

In view of the increasing demand for water in the Kona area of Hawaii, we are desirous of establishing records of chlorides for the existing domestic well[sources at Kahaluu (USGS Nos. 12-5 and 12-6) and Keei (USGS Nos. 12-4 and 12-8).

We presently receive regular reports of bacterialogical quality (coliform count, pH, and residual.. chlorine) for "Keei Well A Pump Top" and IlKahaluu Park Tap outside kitchen", pre­pared by the Division of Sanitation at Hilo. If it can be done without too much inconvenience, we would like to request your Department to include chloride analyses of the water from the water taps at the top of Keei Well A and Kahaluu Well #1. This additional chloride data will provide needed long-range records on the existing ground ''later supplies for Kona, Hawaii.
