"When asked if I am pessimistic or

optimistic about the future, my answer is

always the same: If you look at the

science about what is happening on

earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t

understand the data. But if you meet the

people who are working to restore this

earth and the lives of the poor, and you

aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse."

~ Paul Hawken

What Is Service Learning?

A teaching method that combines meaningful

service with curriculum-based learning.

Students improve their academic skills by

applying what they learn in school to the real

world. They then reflect on their experience to

reinforce the link between their service and their

learning.

What Defines Service?

Differences between service learning,

volunteering, and community service:

Volunteering: Emphasis is on work being done

Example: Clearing invasive plants from a park.

Community Service: Emphasis is on the people

being served

Example: Doing a food drive at school

Service Learning: Emphasis on the relationship
