Facts about Pearl Harbor

1. Pearl Harbor is on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu.

2. Pearl Harbor was bombed on Sunday, December 7th, 1941.

“A date that will live in infamy.”

3. That was during World War II. The United States declared war on the Japanese Empire because of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

4. The Japanese Empire used not only planes in the attack, but also two-man mini submarines.

5. The main targets were the U.S. battleships: U.S.S. Arizona, U.S.S. California, U.S.S. Maryland, U.S.S. Nevada, U.S.S. Oklahoma, U.S.S. Tennessee, U.S.S. Utah, and U.S.S. West Virginia.

6. The U.S.S. Arizona was hit the worst and was sunk.

7. The U.S.S. Oklahoma was turned upside down.

8. The U.S.S. West Virginia was torn open.

9. The overall death toll reached 2,350. 1,177 were from the U.S.S. Arizona.

10. On the same day, the Japanese Empire also attacked Midway, Wake Island, Guam, the Philippines, Malaya, and Thailand.

After the attack, many American men, women and dogs joined the military. The group Dogs for Defense was founded in January 1942 to train dogs for the military. 11.

The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is built over the remains of the ship. Oil still bubbles up from the U.S.S. Arizona to this day. 12.
