Students are automatically exempt from the first writing requirement if at least one of the following statements is true: 1. They are an Echols scholar. 2. They scored 720 or above on the writing

portion of the SAT exam. 3. They scored a 5 on the AP English

language subject test.

Second Writing Requirement • The second writing requirement must

be completed at UVa with a course in the College.

• Students should not take a class that fills this requirement until they complete the First Writing Requirement.

8

Foreign Language Requirement • Placement is based on an SAT II or UVa

Placement Exam score. AP scores cannot be used for placement; only for exemption.

• Certain scores on the AP, higher-level IB, SAT II or UVa Placement Exam may exempt a student from the foreign language requirement.

9

Foreign Language Requirement • Dual enrollment credit does NOT

fulfill the foreign language requirement.

• If a student received high school credit, they must still take the UVa Placement Exam unless they took an SAT II language exam.

10

Area Requirements • Social Sciences • Humanities • Historical Studies • Non-Western Perspectives • Math/Science

AP, higher-level IB credit and dual enrollment credit earned before a student matriculates may be used to fulfill area requirements.

11

Social Sciences To fill this requirement students must complete two 3-or more credit classes from 2 different departments.

12

Humanities Requirement To fill this requirement students must complete two 3-or more credit classes from 2 different categories.

13

Categories: • Literature (all ENLT classes and literature in

translation classes) • Fine Arts (Music, Art and Drama but not

complete 12 credits from 2 different departments.

17

All courses used to satisfy the Competency and Area Requirements MUST be: 1. Taken for a letter grade, and 2. Taken only at U.Va.

One exception: the language requirement may be filled with courses taken at a pre-approved study abroad program.

18

Notes: • 60 of the 120 credits must be earned

at U.Va. • Of the 120 credits needed to

graduate, 102 credits MUST be from courses taught “inside” the College.

• A maximum of 18 credits may be from electives “outside” the College.

19

Courses “outside” the College include most courses taught in the Schools of: • Batten • Commerce • Engineering • Education • Architecture • Nursing and . . .

20

University Seminars (USEM 1570) • no more than 1 USEM per semester • USEM 1580s are College credit INST CLASSES (Interdisciplinary Study) • limited to two courses, no more than 3

credits total LASE CLASSES (Liberal Arts Seminars) ROTC CLASSES, no more than 12 credits PHYE CLASSES (PHYE) • no more than 2 credits total, no more than

1 course per semester

21

Some Tips… A normal course load is 15 credits – students should not overload in their first semester – but they should ALWAYS START with 15 credits. Remind them that they cannot get from one side of Grounds to the other in the 10 minute break between classes. They should NOT repeat any course for which they have earned credit via AP, IB or dual enrollment – students cannot earn credit for the same class twice. Four years/8 semesters is the maximum to complete a degree.

22

And . . . Remember USEMs and COLAs. Students should look for something new that they have never studied before and something that feels “safe”. All classes should be taken for a grade. College students must complete the degree in 8 semesters (NOT including summer sessions, January Term or part-time fall/spring semesters).

23

What is Academic Good Standing? To be in Good Standing a student must . . . • Pass 12 credits; • Earn a minimum 1.800 GPA; • Earn no more than one grade

below C-.

24

Students must meet each of the above 3 criteria to be in Good Academic Standing. Failure to meet any one of these criteria results in being placed on academic probation. Consecutive semesters (fall to spring or spring to fall) on probation lead to academic suspension for a full year.

25

You are not the only source of help! Please tell students to access ALL of the help available to them in the College and at U.Va.: • Association Dean • Director of Undergraduate Program (DUP) • Residence Life (RA and SR) • ULINK (Peer Academic Advising Program) • Faculty • Graduate Student Tas • OAAA, CUE, ODOS, SDAC, Writing Center,

etc. 26

Down the road… Every student must also complete a major in one of the College’s departments, interdepartmental programs, or an individually designed Interdisciplinary Major.

27

To graduate from the College each student must: 1. Complete all area and competency

requirements at U.Va.*; 2. Complete a major; 3. Pass 120 credits in 8 semesters with

a minimum 2.000 GPA.

* The foreign language requirement may be filled with approved study abroad credits. 28

29

ARC, the Academic Resource Center, is: “… a resource to bridge the gap between students and the wealth of academic information spread across the web. It is packed with info about majors, deadlines, and resources to help you get the most out of your time.”

ULink is the University Peer Advising Link. The Peer Advising Link serves as a peer advising program for all undergraduate students at the University of Virginia. The program follows the University Board of Visitors’ Strategic Vision to strengthen advising at the University. For those organizations and student groups that already have advising programs, ULink may serve as an optional supplement, or compliment, for the student. The program does not nullify or overshadow these programs, and will operate with developed partnerships with such programs.
