Developing Promotion Standards for Non-Tenure Track Academic Faculty
Two workshops were held earlier this semes-ter to assist academic and administrative units with developing promotion standards for non-tenure track academic faculty. Five guiding prin-ciples were presented and a panel of experts offered advice on developing standards. Panelists
included: Barbara St. Pierre Schneider of the School of Nursing, Emily Shreve of the Academic Success Center, Nathan Slife of the College of Education, Paul Schulte of the School of Life Sci-ences, Jacob Thompson of the College of Urban Affairs, and John Tuman of the College of Liberal Arts. The workshop presentation as well as a repository of promotion standards collected from across campus are available on the Faculty Affairs website.
Campus Talk
On Feb. 1st., Dr. Kelly Mack of the Association of American Colleges & Universities gave a talk ti-tled "That None Shall Perish: Cultivating a Culture of Inclusive Excellence." The event was attended by over 90 faculty and staff who came together to learn how to be better allies for one an-other to facilitate cam-pus change. (I'm meeting with Barbee Oakes on Wednesday and will know then whether I can include the next steps from this event in this news-letter.)

The UNLV Faculty Center
F A C U L T Y A F F A I R S
The spring semester began with the campus thank-ing Mary-Ann Winkelmes for her tenure as the Director of the Faculty Development, as she de-parted for a new position at Brandies University. The Office of Faculty Affairs welcomed two new interim co-directors, Melissa Bowles-Terry - Head of Educational Initiatives, University Libraries, and Sebern Coleman - Graduate Recruitment and CRM Specialist, UNLV Graduate College. Melissa and Sebern are excited to help shape the structure of the new Faculty Center while the Office of Faculty Affairs conducts a national search for a new direc-tor.
This Faculty Center has hosted two events since the start of the Spring semester. On January 29,
2019, the Center hosted its Best Teaching Practices Expo and provided a platform for UNLV faculty to showcase successful teaching tactics that they have implemented in the classroom. The Faculty Center was proud to have
over 200 participants and 34 poster presenters this year, with a wide variety of Colleges represented and an amazing mix of both academic and admin-
istrative faculty. If you missed the event, you can visit Digital Scholarship to view the posters that were presented.
A workshop entitled “Student Motivation, Engage-ment & Peer Learning” was held on February 8, 2019. This event, hosted by Jarrett Keene and Gabe Judkins, provided participants with expert advice on how to engage students in the class-room.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events this semester. Our next event will be an online seminar on “Effective Assessment for Large Classes” on February 20th in the Student Union, Room 205. To RSVP for this event, please click here. For a list of upcoming events, please visit us at https://www.unlv.edu/provost/idr/events), or
contact us at facdev@unlv.edu.
We’re Moving! (Eventually)
Beam Hall is currently under construction for the new Faculty Center. This space will house confer-ence space, work space, workshop and training space, and a common space. We are excited that these plans are underway and look forward to wel-coming you when it is ready (expected by Fall 2019).
Other Happenings 2019 UNLV Great Colleges to Work For Survey
Between March 11th
and April 5th the Great
Colleges to Work For
program will be adminis-
tering a faculty/staff
survey. All full-time em-
ployees are eligible to participate and will be ran-
domly invited to complete the survey. If you are
contacted by Great Colleges, we would greatly
appreciate your honest feedback. The results of
this study will help identify areas for opportunities,
growth, and improvement and inform our Top Tier
goal of being recognized as a great place to work
by 2025.
UNLV Folio
Launching in March, UNLV Folio is the university's
new information management system for adminis-
trative reviews. Within a secure and convenient
web-based environment, UNLV Folio provides a
database and reporting tool for faculty members
to document their scholarly achievements along
with a workflow module for university administra-
tors to manage a variety of review processes, in-
cluding annual evaluations and promotion and
tenure reviews. Once new accounts are ready for
use, faculty members and administrative staff in
academic units will receive login information by
email. Live and web-based training will be widely
available to help users learn the system.
