Fall 2020 Ensemble Placement Auditions for FLUTE and PICCOLO
Please prepare the following excerpts. You will be asked to play both flute and piccolo excerpts. You may opt to prepare ONLY the flute parts; however, you may not audition solely on piccolo. It is in your best interest to download these parts in its entirety from IMSLP. Sight-reading may be asked of any passage in the following Flute I parts. For thoroughness and attention to detail, it is highly recommended you listen to these scores and follow along with recordings. FLUTE Please play straight through the following excerpts. DO NOT EDIT in between excerpts. DO NOT EDIT between pieces. Plan to play all excerpts in the following order, paying particular emphasis to sound, intonation, dynamics and rhythm. 1. Beethoven Symphony No. 9, first movement: Letter P to one measure before R, as marked in red. COUNT and OBSERVE all rests. 2. Beethoven Symphony No. 9, second movement: Letter G to the end of the page, as marked in red. COUNT and OBSERVE all rests. 3. Beethoven Symphony No. 9, last movement: Pick-up to letter D through letter F, as marked in red. COUNT and OBSERVE all rests. 4. Brahms Symphony No. 1, last movement: 9th measure of B to one measure before C. STOP at letter C. IF YOU HAVE PICCOLO - please switch to piccolo and record no. 5. If you do not have a piccolo, please continue to play no. 5 on FLUTE. 5. Beethoven Symphony No. 9, last movement: on PICCOLO (preferably), or FLUTE (if you do not have a piccolo) measures 343 to 374 ONLY.
