We read reports daily about the ongoing presence of the coronavirus and the extremely transmissible Delta variant. The sharp increase in hospitalizations from the virus both here in Houston and around the country is very concerning. Please continue to pray for an end to this pandemic, for the healing of those infected, and for the protection of those vulnerable to the virus. Your parish leadership continues to carefully monitor and evaluate our protocols. You can find our most updated protocols at any time this fall at bit.ly/sjd-covid-protocol or by scanning this code.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for read-ing through this booklet describing ministry of-ferings and opportunities
at St. John the Divine for this program year 2021-2022. I hope that you will fi nd the following pages not only in-formative but inspiring. In these days of ongoing challenge for the Church, I am very grateful that this congrega-tion provides many opportunities for all of us to GATHER, GROW, and GO in the faith.
The beginning of every new program year brings each parishioner to a crossroads of sorts: in what direction does one choose to travel in his or her life of faith given the options and opportunities available at St. John the Divine, especially given other com-mitments and over-busyness in life? What decisions – or non-decisions – will one make to move forward with hopes of growing in grace, “to matu-rity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Ephesians 4.13)?
Many of us have been detached or disconnected from parish life over many months, for understandable reasons, or have solely connected to church virtually. Yet despite challenge and disruption, we know that God is not taking a break from church. Our call to continued health precautions has not diminished the almost palpa-ble energy so many of us have about
this new season of life in our parish family. We need each other. And our families, our neighbors, and our city need a strong, vibrant St. John the Divine as well. Whether you choose to participate in our ministries in-person, digitally, or in some combination of both, I encourage you into more meaningful membership this fall. For I believe God is awaiting your renewed decision to deepen your life in Christ.
Please join me in praying daily for a new and perhaps surprising season of revitalization for St. John the Divine. We all want a vital parish. The seeds of vitality are sown as more and more people here take personal responsibil-ity for their own life in faith, respond-ing more robustly to God’s gift of life in Jesus. He will bring growth in the power of the Spirit.
Ultimately, there can be no indi er-ence to the gospel and no staying put in the Christian life. Certainly, there is no staying put in the life of this parish. We are embarking on an ex-tremely signifi cant program year and your participation is not only deeply desired, it is especially needed at this time. Thank you for your considera-tion, and know I look forward to shar-ing in all of God’s blessings that await us in the months to come.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill, Rector
