Characteristics of an Ideal Filipino Family

Lifetime relationship grounded in romantic love and the institution of marriage

Presence of children and activities of child raising

Emotionally supportive environment Gender-based division of labor and

authority Parental authority and control

Main characteristics of the Ideal Filipino Family are:

Social institution: accepted practice that bestows moral legitimacy on the relationship

Ceremony: ritual signalling that a special relationship has been formed

Legal status: set of rights and responsibilities backed up by the legal processes and sanctions

MARRIAGE

Marriage is supposed to be based on romantic love, rather than arranged marriages or marriages for “economic reasons”.

Romantic love is supposed to be the motivation for getting married, the emotional legitimacy for the marital relationship and the cement that keeps the relationship together

ROMANTIC LOVE

Supposed to be a lifetime commitment and a lifelong relationship

LIFETIME RELATIONSHIP

CHILDREN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT GENDER

B/W FAMILY & SOCIETY Male – work outside of home Female - works to maintain home and family

WITHIN THE FAMILY Male Female Patriarchy

PARENTAL CONTROL

It’s easy to surmise the main social problems of the family. Real people have a difficult time maintaining lifetime commitments. Love is a feeling that can easily disappear, taking with it an important foundation for marriage. Families do not necessarily need the institution of marriage to exist. Families can exist without ever producing children. The family can easily be abusive, rather than supportive environment. Gender norms have been strongly and radically challenged in our society. Parental authority has been significantly challenged by the media, peer subculture and pop culture.
