What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is smart and responsible actions that prioritize people, natural resources, and finances to safeguard the health of future generations. 

The Office of Sustainability

A brief overview• Established in 2006 • Coordinate the University Sustainability

Committee and the JHU Climate Implementation Plan

• Resource for ALL University divisions – added East Baltimore office in 2010

• Creation of the Sustainability Network

It isn’t all or nothing

• We all have competing priorities• Reduce barriers • Start small and work up• There are always tradeoffs• Don’t beat yourself up or give up• It’s a mindset not a checklist

RECYCLING: THERE IS NO VALUE IN WASTE

WATER: WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

TRANSPORTATION: PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES (AND FEET!)

COMMUNITY: BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD

Greening Your Holidays!• Gifts• Decorations• Entertaining

Gifts

• Give an experience or membership• Handmade items• Items made with

sustainable/environmentally friendly materials

• Buy local• Use recycled wrapping paper and recycle the

paper you get• Buy rechargeable batteries• Bring a reusable bag when shopping or

combine purchases into one bag

Decorations

• Living tree or cut your own locally www.marylandsbest.net

• Recycle your tree• Minimize electric lights – traditional

cranberry and popcorn string!• Put lights on a timer• LED Christmas lights – avoid icicle

lights• Send E-cards

Entertaining

• Recycle everything.• Asks guests to bring canned

goods to donate.• Use regular dishes instead of

disposable one. If you must use disposables, use dishes made out of recycled paper not plastic.

• Turn down the heat a few degrees when cooking and before guests arrive.
