There are some days when I t hink "why do

I keep trying to be a better mountain biker?

I'm already over thirty and its time to just let

go, get fat and die slowly." But I only think

that way when I'm stuck in traffic or after

some chick just turned me down for a date. When I'm on my bike I know I'm in my pr ime

and I've only just begun to truly live.

    IHE

RIIJEWehad to put it off a week due to weather. and this

time of year you don't knowwhat the weather isgoing todo until the morning ifthe day in question. Theoriginaldate set wasJ anuary 8th. but the rainyweek priorandthe cold temperatures prompted the mysteryhoncho topunt". Thenext Saturday promisedcold temps but notas much mud. sothe mysteryphonesquad made somecalls. Onthe sunny morning of J anuary 15th.20hearty.hardcore members of BUMPshowed up at LLoyd'son280at 10:45amin20degree weather to ride.

Our long caravan of bike-covered vehiclesgot backon280to make the 30minute tripto Childersburgwherethe mysteryride would be unfolded. We arrived at themysterymeeting place: MerklesJ unkYard. While wemade our arctic preparations in escalatingtemperatures of over 25 degrees. more and more bike-bedecked vehicles came rolling in. Itwas a mountainbikingfestival!

As the mystery unravelled further. BUMPmysteryleader. Bill Garrett had arranged for our out-of-townmysteryleader PerryClark ofthe SylacaugaBicycleClubto showustheir turf. Perryand his5compadres presentthat day proceeded to lead uson a very well organizedride. Thegroup was large so we were divided into twogroups: Thehammer crowd which Perryled ona 20mileride.did both the Flagpole MountainTowerLoopand theCreekTrail. The rest of were adeptly led by ChrisPilandon the very very hilly 12.5mile FlagpoleMountainTower

Loop. Each of the groups were provided cheerfulcabooses. Ours was Fred Bradford. who very kindlyledone ofour members back to the cars when she beganexperiencing the initial stagesof frostbiteinhertoes.

The members of the Sylacauga Bicycle Club wereenthusiasticabout riding with our club. The club hastwenty orsomembers and is into it'sthirdyear. We hada wonderful time that day despite the cold. with Perry

    ASK HUGHIEDear Hughie.

My friend Sven says the new vented bikesaddles for women are not politically correct! Ineed to know, ifa guy uses one, is this a cross or a

    bi-cycle?

DearInsecure,Uh, uh, uh, nill'mnot really familiar with

these new saddles....but it seems to me that we asmen in the 90's need tobecome more comfortablewith ourfeminine sides. Annnnd this of courseis, wellllllll, harder for some of us than forothers....depending upon, that is, how incredibly

manly we are in thefirst place. unsuspect youhavesome, uh, uh, soul searching to do.

    Dear Hughie,

Why do people have to be rude on the

    trails ...hikers or bikers?

    Dearsensitive,

mill think weall know that down throughthe ages people have hated what they don'tunderstand. This of course does not account forthe phenomenon of 'bike onbike" crime. You see,I toohcweexperienced beingbuzzed on my bike bya Tread with his headup his...uh, uh...that is to

say...we all needto be aware ofsome basic "trailetiquette". While riding your bike and passing ahiker, slow down to a walking pace and speak:

thank themfor stepping to the side or make anappreciative comment about the weather ornature or something. While riding downhill,

yield to a rider coming uphill unless they instructyou to come through. We don'truninto horses atOak Mountain, but whenever you encounter ahorse while riding anywhere, always dismountand request directions from the rider. IIHl thinkyou get the idea.
