Welcome
The Festival of Ideas is our community soaring
together. The Festival is a showcase of creativity
and innovation, not focussed on finished, polished
products or refined solutions but more on the thinking,
design, risk taking and the enterprising processes
behind them.
The event will proudly display the rich learning journey from ELC to Year 12, it will give us all reassuring insights into how our young stars critically engage with world politics, environmental and social justice issues. We will see collaboration and teamwork at its best and hear our students, staff and parents articulate with clarity and passion, their ideas and convictions.
The Festival of Ideas unleashes St John’s student agency. That opportunity for young people to pursue their interests and strengths, entwine those in their everyday learning in meaningful and relevant ways and make decisions about the pathways that their learning weaves... that is student agency at its best and this Festival will be an example of what the school does very well.
The Festival of Ideas is fun and spirited. The day is an exposé of chaos, dysfunction, debate and free-spirit. That makes for some fun and excitement. There is genuine celebration of the joy and enthusiasm of learning that we can all share in.
The Festival of Ideas is a great idea and I welcome you all to our first dive into disruption!

Keynote Speaker
After working extensively on simulation
theory, imagination, empathy and fiction,
in recent years, esteemed academic,
researcher and author, Dr Ian Ravenscroft
has focused on the cognitive science of
terrorism. He regularly gives public talks
on philosophy and is often called upon by
media for his expertise.
Dangerous ideas challenge the laws or social
conventions of their time. Darwin’s theory of
evolution was—and still is—a dangerous idea. I’ll
present a few examples of dangerous ideas and
invite you to express your own views.
Don’t miss Dr Ravenscroft’s “Dangerous Ideas” at 5.30PM in the JBC.

Social Media Panel Q&ALed by Principal, Richard Anderson
“At a time where serious questions are being raised
about the impact of excessive use of technology by
young people, schools and other organisations are
in debate over what responsibilities they have and
actions they need to adopt in response. Our panel will
try to seek a solution for St John’s Grammar.”
