Newsletter January 2020
Hendricks Elementary
School FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL: Hawk Families:
Happy New Year! As we look forward into 2020 this is a great time to work with your children on setting goals
for academic success. Consider encouraging them to read a new book, work on memorizing math facts, practice
their writing skills and have consistent great attendance.
Report Cards: Watch for your child's repor t card to come home on Wednesday, January 8th. Be sure to go
over the grades, take the time to celebrate successes and identify areas for continued growth and refinement. It is
important that students feel part of their education by setting goals with family.
Awards Assembly: The second quar ter awards assemblies will be on Friday, January 10th at 8:30 am for
grades 1-3 and 9:30 am for grades 4-6. Please remember to not park in the dirt along Orange Grove Road. Find a
space directly in front of the school or along the side street on the NE side of Orange Grove in the designated park-
ing area. We look forward to seeing you as we honor our students’ achievements and successes!
PTO: A huge thank you to our PTO and volunteers for a wonderful Hendr icks Holiday in December . The
turnout was wonderful and everyone had so much fun. A special shout-out to the Hawks choir and Caballero dance
teams who all got us in the holiday spirit with their wonderful performances!
Tax Credit: It is a new year but not too late to consider suppor ting our school with a tax credit donation.
Tax credit dollars are used for field trips, extra-curricular activities, and school-wide assemblies. Arizona law al-
lows taxpayers to receive a tax credit of up to $400 per family for donations made to public schools. Tax credit
donations may still be made for 2019 and are accepted through April 15, 2020. If you are able to donate, it would
make all the difference to our school. Please see the included tax credit form for more details.
Shows: First graders put on the fabulous show “Toys” right before break. Great teamwork by Mrs. McCarthy,
Mrs. Merriman, Mrs. Young, Ms. Sabin, Ms. Teylar and Mr. Fred to make
this show a success – it was adorable! We are looking forward to our 2nd
grade performance on Monday, February 17th.
Thank You Sixth Graders: Our 6th graders celebrated their hard work
at Fiesta Lanes on December 12th, bowling with their friends and teachers.
The entire school thanks them for their service in the cafeteria each day
during the 1st semester. The top bowler and winner of $15 was Troy Nelson!
I wish you all a prosperous and wonderful start to the New Year.

A Big thank you to all our parent volunteers who helped make Grandparents Week a great success! Melissa Mozingo, Georgina Chandler, Veronica Chandler, Denise Hernandez, Nicole Scott, Brandi Nixon, Shawn Cowen and our Sentinel Peak cadets, we ap-preciate you!
Happy 2020! We hope your family enjoyed a
peaceful and fun holiday season. As the new
year begins, we are gearing up for lots of learn-
ing ahead. We will also begin our plans for the
100th day of school. We have many fun activi-
ties – check your child’s folder! Remember to write names on all new
winter coats. Our Arizona weather has us losing jackets during lunch.
Happy New Year to All! Thanks so much to all our
families for all of their “behind the scenes” efforts
and donations in preparation of our holiday musical!
We could not have done the show without your extra
love and support to costumes, props, and line mem-
orization. You made all of First Grade shine!
New math packets for third quarter will be sent home with your child’s re-
port card. Please begin studying subtraction and addition facts to 10!
Also, Sight Word List part 3 will be sent home for your child to practice and
instantly recognize without sounding out any of the words.
Thank you for all of your support!
Thank you for all of the craft and party donations before
break. We had a great celebration. We hope you had a
wonderful break with your child, and they had a chance to
rest, regroup, and are ready to come back and work hard
before AzM2 testing. Regular homework will resume this
week. Please make sure you are checking your student’s
homework folder and agenda nightly. After you see your
child has completed homework, please sign their agenda.
Agendas will be checked daily for signatures. AzM2 test-
ing is right around the corner, so please make sure your child is here and on time
every day. We ask that you try not to schedule vacations during school time because
missing one day can influence students greatly. Thank you for all of the support you
give to ensure your child’s success
Happy 2020 to all our families! We hope you had a wonderful winter break with friends and families!! We hope that is was full of love, happiness and time spent together. 2020 is going to be very busy in 2nd grade!! First we would like to welcome Ms. Jessica to Miss Dennis' and Ms.
Logsdon to Mrs. Hitchings' class full time, they are both completing their student teaching through the UofA and we both excited to be working at Hendricks, make sure to welcome them both. When we get back to school in January we will start our study of the desert; because we will be going to Sabino Canyon on our field trips!! Mrs. Hitchings' TUESDAY Jan. 21st. Miss Dennis' and Mrs. LaRue's classes will be going WEDNESDAY Jan 22nd . Permission slips and more information will be com-ing home. This is a great time of year to set new goals with your child to maintain new home-
work habits or new active experiences as a family (take advantage of the great
weather this time of year to be outdoors). We are looking forward to the rest of this
school year with your child and seeing you on the field trip and at the Award Assem-
bly Friday, January 10th. Also mark your calendars for our 2nd grade Family Forum
on January 27th; we will be focusing on setting goals based on your child's academic
progress made already this year!
Happy New Year! In fifth grade, we are full steam ahead working on our science fair projects.
It is exciting to see our students analyze real data to notice patterns that drive excellent
questions. We are beginning a new module in reading that focuses on different forms of art!
Encourage your child to identify different types of art in the community or at home. Share
with them your positive experiences with art as well. In math, we are going strong as we
learn how to graph, make tables, and find the area of shapes. We appreciate your support at
home!
As we jump into the new quarter, we are excited to see our students' growth. Having your
child read at home and practice their math facts truly makes a difference. We are also look-
ing forward to students showing more and more responsibility as we begin to prepare them
for sixth grade. Encourage them to do more on their own and be responsible for bigger and
better things. As always, thank you to all of you that continue to support not only your stu-
dent, but us as well.
Thank you to all our fourth grade families for their support to us and their children during the first semester. We appreciate your willingness to work with your child on weekly spelling tests as well as memorizing those math facts. Thank you parents for checking your child’s planner on a daily basis. This is a great way to see what assignments your child needs to do each day, as well as a communication tool between home and school.
In math, we are finishing unit 5, which focuses on adding and subtracting large numbers. Students have been learning different strategies and working on really understanding the US standard algorithm. In reading, we are start-ing Module 6, which focuses on Earth's Natural Wonders. Students will work on iden-tifying and understanding different types of figurative language as well as continuing to develop good comprehension strategies. We look forward to a great second se-mester with your student.

It’s hard to believe we are halfway done with our year already! Hope all our families
had a restful break and are ready to continue working hard during the 3rd
quarter.
Don’t forget our engineering projects are due January 31st, and the Science Fair is
February 6th. **The students were told that they are able to hand write the papers to
put on their science boards. They do not need the use of a computer.
We will begin reading The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle for third quarter lit stud-
ies. In addition to the literature we will be reading in class this quarter, the students will
be working on another book of their choice at home. They will use this for their Read-
ing Log, and will have a book project due at the end of 5 weeks.
Welcome back!
