Alban Butler was a holy man, and a smart one, too. A devout Catholic when being one was difficult
in 1700's England, he read all the time. It is recorded that he read at meals, while walking, and even
while on horseback. He was ordained a priest, and his lasting contribution to the Church was an impres-
sive record of the lives of some 1,600 saints, first published in four volumes in London between 1757
and 1760. Since then, scholars—priests and men and women religious—have continued his legacy in
publishing updated collections of "Butler's Lives of the Saints." And our daily Mass attendees know that
I take some shots at the editorial board of a Butler's collection I bought shortly after I was ordained. In
general, some of the entries of saints' lives express more skepticism than they should.
And so the entry for February 11th reflects on the Catholic piety of making pilgrimage to holy places. "Pilgrimages made in specific
request of healing have, though, been criticized for offering a hope most likely to be disappointed, with resulting bitterness, rather than
encouraging people with disabilities to come to terms with them and take control of their lives." Take control of their lives...... Sounds
to me like the exact opposite of surrendering all of our concerns and worries and pains to Jesus. The entry concludes with this: "But the
overwhelming experience of Lourdes among the sick, their helpers from the (stretcher-bearers, or now, those who push wheelchairs), to
the dish washers in the kitchen, and the healthy who go for their own reasons, is a reaffirmation of faith and hope through an exercise of
communal charity that would be hard to find paralleled anywhere else."
To this particular editor's defense, he does include the detailed account of Marie-Louise Bailly, a 23-year-old woman who in 1902 was
on the point of dying from tubercular peritonitis. Her doctor was Alexis Carrel, a man who had long since lost the Catholic faith of his
childhood. (He would return to his faith eventually). When his young patient insisted on making pilgrimage to Lourdes, he objected in
the strongest terms on the grounds that the travel alone might kill her. By this point, her abdomen was distended with solid tumors and
fluid. The spring water at Lourdes was and is believed to have healed people. When this water was applied to Marie-Louise's abdomen,
the protrusions disappeared within two hours, and she made a full recovery. She joined the Sisters of Charity and died in 1937 after a
life of hard physical work in caring for the sick. During that time, she was never ill again.
The history of Lourdes is a riveting story. A 14-year-old girl, St. Bernadette Soubirous, claimed a series of visions of a " Lady" in a
cave outside her village between February 11 and July 16, 1858. The "Lady" would eventually identify herself as "the Immaculate Con-
ception," a belief about Mary defined as dogma four years earlier. Just a ruse by the Church intended to promote the new dogma? So
thought the skeptics. The problem with this is that representatives of the "official Church"—including the local parish priest at the
time—were all doubters. It was the persistence and clarity of young Bernadette that the Church found so compelling, believing now that
the Blessed Mother favored Bernadette with these apparitions and the simple call to repentance, to an entire change of life, leading to
spiritual—and physical—healing in Jesus. More than three million pilgrims go to Lourdes each year. Our Lady of Lourdes' feast day on
February 11th is designated as a day of prayer for the sick. May it also be a day of faith and hope for us, believing in Mother Mary's
desire that a humble peasant girl bring to the world, and to the sick, fresh hope.
Yours, Father Eric

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING 13 JANUARY 2021
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING was held 13 Jan 2021 in the church basement. Members were socially distanced and wore
masks. Meeting was called to order at 5:32 with a prayer lead by Father Eric.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Father Eric, David Schmidt, David Kuderer, Ron Luebke, Beau Leis, Linda Svoboda, Maureen Richardson
The Council Elected David Schmidt to be the President of the Parish Council. Father requested volunteers to serve on the Parish Coun-
cil. If anyone is interested in serving the Parish in a more pastoral way, please contact Father, David Schmidt or any member.
EVANGILIZATION: Dead Theologian Society continues to flourish. Father is hosting it two Sundays evenings per month in the Rec-
tory. The Parish Youth and young adults (10
th
grade and up) are studying the Saints in an engaging and fun way through storytelling;
while maintaining Social Distance. There is a small fee for the Parish to belong but well worth it. On the topic of evangelization Fa-
ther is looking to start up a new program for the men of the parish called “THAT MAN IS YOU.” Father is looking to meet one morn-
ing per week (perhaps a Friday) for 13 weeks. There will be food and coffee provided. In the bulletin (24 Jan) he wrote that it would
be bow-hunting early. He is thinking about a program for the women as well. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR SOMETHING TO
COME OUT SOON!!
SUMMERFEST: Things are starting to percolate with the Summerfest Committee! 3
rd
Weekend in August! Definitely at Eagles
again. It was an overwhelming success in spite of COVID!! Please share your ideas with the Committee members.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: COVID has definitely put a damper on our Religious Ed program. However, we are getting started
again! We are still on track for First Reconciliation 10 April and on track for First Communion!! We are looking forward to a Vaca-
tion Bible School for the Summer (July date TBD).
SCHOOL DINNERS: Catholic Schools Week Drive through Spaghetti Dinner Sunday 31 January! St Patrick's Day Dinner (Take Out
only) 14 March! 16 May Chicken Que (Take Out or Drive through – More to follow). Great news that we are becoming active
again….while following CDC and Diocese guidelines.
CEMETERY BOARD: We will be updating the “plotting” of the cemetery. Purchasing a Software that will cost approximately $5K-
$10K. It is a one time fee, with a follow on annual fee, but will bring us into the 21
st
century and provide more accuracy as we go for-
ward. We are about to cross over into the vacant field. Additionally, work continues on obtaining a quality fence for the front of the
cemetery.
THE BULLETIN: Folks, as with everything the cost of the bulletin advertisements have increased. This doesn’t cost the parish, but it
does cost our parishioners who advertise in the bulletin. Father has expressed a desire to bring to support local businesses and this is an
opportunity to have one of our own parishioners take over the printing of the bulletin. In the next couple of weeks a Team will be noti-
fying our advertisers of the change and working out a new plan with them.
Keep the Parish and each other in your prayers. We are all in this together!
Meeting Adjourned at 6:30 pm
Next Meeting 24 Feb 5:30 and the following one 24 Mar 5:30.
Yours in Christ,
David Schmidt
