PRINCE OF PEACE PARISH// PODCAST: frdan1966.podomatic.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/
Dear Parishioners,
Lent is coming upon us and we are planning
different parish events to assist you in making this
a wonderful Lenten experience. I am thinking that
I would like to call this year’s Lenten program,
“Lent like it used to be!” As I mentioned before we
are trying something new by having daily Mass at
6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. I did this when I was in Falmouth
and it was very popular. It made it very convenient for people to make
a commitment to go to daily Mass because they could go after work.
Moreover, it is a great opportunity for many to go as a family. The
7:00 AM will continue for the early risers or those who do not have to
get children ready in the morning. Unfortunately, due to the number
of priests available to say Mass along with the regular funeral
schedule, we have to remove the daily 12:15 Mass at the Basilica. I
know that it was a great opportunity to go during your lunch hour. I
am hoping that you will still be able to commit to daily Mass after
work.
The reason why I am dubbing this year’s season, “Lent like it
used to be!” is because I remember my own experience of going to
daily Mass with my mother during Lent. Also, we have something
each night of the week that we hope will appeal to the different needs
of our parish. Monday, Scott will go over the basic Catholic hymns
that have been in our faith for hundreds of years and every Catholic
should know as part of basic Catholic culture. Tuesday, Fr. Raj will do
faith sharing. Wednesday, Fr John will do Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament and praise and worship. Thursday, I decided to do a Bible
study on the Book of Exodus, and Friday, we have the Stations of the
Cross and a simple meal. Each of these events are connected to the
6:00 PM Mass and will be held at Holy Family Church. As you begin
to think of what you want to do for Lent, consider making a
commitment to one or all of these events to make this Lent a “Lent like
it used to be!”
With everyone coming to the front to receive Holy Communion, I
am trying to make accommodations for those who find it too difficult.
The first pews at the Basilica, Holy Family and Holy Cross are for
handicapped people and the break at Holy Family and Holy Cross are
also for those who find it difficult to walk. The Eucharistic Ministers
will bring Communion to you. At the Basilica, we will have someone
distributing Communion to those who find it difficult as well. Please
contact us if you would like to receive these accommodations so that
we can tend to your needs. Peace, Fr. Daniel

HISPANIC MINISTRY
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
What does it mean to be salt and light? If we listen carefully to Jesus’ words, we gain some direction. To be salt
means to bring taste, zest, and joy to life. We are asked to liven things up a bit by allowing the joy of our faith to
spill over into the lives of others. Only a sincere and deep relationship with God can freshen up humanity and set
it on proper course. To be light means that our faith must translate into action so that we can be Christ for others
and extend the same arm of mercy and compassion that Christ did. Our acts of piety, then, cannot be directed
solely at ourselves. Prayer is never about selfbenefit but must always be directed toward union with God,
deepening our relationships with one another and learning how to be effective stewards of the beautiful universe
God has entrusted to our care.
The Master gives us wise direction in terms of how we can best become the salt and light he desires. Listen
carefully to the Beatitudes. Think about the oppression and alienation that exists in our world, the violence and
prejudice, the anger and the hatred, the fear and the shame. All of these things require action. The poor need
food, housing, and clothes. Hatred must be replaced by love. Retaliation and violence by forgiveness. Our
thoughts and speech can become more like Christ. We can change and continue to change. Blessed John Henry
Cardinal Newman said, “To live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.”
But it doesn’t end with just offering the bandages needed to heal wounds. It must go deeper. We must ask
ourselves what has happened that we have found ourselves in this place with these wounds and divisions. What
are their causes? Together we must address these systemic problems, politically and spiritually, and face the
truth. Only then will we truly be salt and light. But then again, we may not like what the light shows us.

St.Scholastica, Virgin(Feb 10)
Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict,
consecrated her life to God when still
very young. She founded a monastery
of nuns about five miles from
Benedict’s monastery. Once a year,
Scholasticaand Benedict would meet at
a house some distance away from their
respective monasteries. During their
last meeting, Scholastica begged her brother to stay
until the next day. When Benedict refused, she knelt
in prayer, and a furious storm burst outside, so that
Benedict could not leave. They spent the night
speaking about spiritual things. Three days later, St.
Scholastica died, and Benedict saw, in a vision, her
soul ascending to heaven.
Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Bishops(Feb 14)
Cyril and Methodius were brothers,
born in Thessalonica in the years 826
and 827. They were sent by the
Patriarch St. Ignatius as missionaries
to the Bulgarians, whom they
converted to Catholicism. Pope
Hadrian II consecrated them Bishops
when they came to Rome to tell him
about their mission. St. Cyril died shortly after, and
Methodius continued alone, preaching successfully
in Moravia, Bohemia, Poland, and neighboring
countries. He translated the Bible into the
SlavicMethodius died around the year 885.
St. Claude de la Colombiere, Priest(Feb 15)
Claude, born in 1641, entered the
Society of Jesus in Lyons, France., and
soon became famous for his abilities as
an orator and educator. He had a great
devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a
devotion which he encouraged St.
Margaret Mary Alacoque to spread,
when he learned of the visions she had received.
Father Claude became a zealous apostle of the
devotion, promoting it when he was sent to
London. He converted the Duke of York, as well as
other Protestants. His preaching earned him the death
sentence, but he was given a commutation, and
returned to France. He died in 1682, and was
canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1992.

Ash Wednesday—Fasting and Abstinence
Latinrite Catholics are required to observe the
discipline of abstinence starting at the age of 14.
There is no upper age limit on abstinence after
which the person is automatically excused, but
those who need to eat meat for a medical reason
may be dispensed from the abstinence requirement.
In the United States, the fasting requirement begins
at age 18 and continues until age 59. At that age, a
person is automatically excused from the
requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday, but, if health permits, may participate in the
fast should he choose to do so.

WHY DO WE USE ASHES?
The Biblical ResponseOver forty passages in the Bible associate ashes with mourning and grief. In Old
Testament times people used ashes as a sign of repentance. They would sit in ashes, roll around in them, sprinkle
them upon their heads, or even mingle them with their food and drink. They did this as an outward sign of their
inward posture of repentance. Check out Daniel 9:36, for an example. Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a time when
we stop and assess how we’re doing in our walk with God. Lent helps us identify spiritual areas in which we can
grow and sinful areas that we need to avoid. To repent, put simply, means to turn away from sin and turn toward
God. We use ashes as an outward expression of our need to begin again.
A Traditional Response
Ashes are a sign of physical death, as in “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” We began as dust (a joyless and lifeless
existence), and our bodies will return to dust until we are raised up by Christ. By receiving ashes and keeping
them on, we publicly proclaim our intent to die to our worldly desires and live even more in Christ’s image, which
we focus on during the season of “rebirth” that is Lent (a Latin term for “Spring”).
Daily 6:00 PM
Mass at Holy Family
during Lent
Why are we adding a 6:00 PM
Mass at Holy Family and not
having the 12:15 Mass at the
Basilica like we always has?
I realize that change is hard but I
believe this change will make it more
convenient for people to attend Mass
during Lent. It has been a long
tradition of going to daily Mass for
Lent as a way to increase the call for
prayer and to sacrifice other things
for the are less holy. The 12:15 Mass
is a great time for workers to take
their lunch time and go to Mass.
However, it is impossible to go as a
family at 12:15. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact me (Fr.
Daniel).
Consider going to daily Mass for Lent .
Abstain from Meat on Fridays of Lent
Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence from meat as a way to
join ourselves to the suffering Christ. The spirit of the day is one of
sacrifice in the choices we make not just staying away from meat.
Join us for a simple meal on Fridays of Lent at Our Lady of the
Rosary, Holy Trinity and Holy Family following either the Stations
of the Cross or Mass.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 9, 2020
ASPERGES GLORIA
“Where two or three are gathered in
my name, there am I in their
midst.” (Mt 18;20)
The church teaches us that in the
celebration of the Mass, Christ is
truly present in the very assembly
gathered in His name, in the person
of the minister, in his word, and
most especially in the Eucharist. The
form of the Mass is a gift to us from
the church fathers, organized
throughout the year in a way that
hopefully, over time, brings us to a
closer understanding of Christ.
Last week we began exploring the
first part of the introductory rites,
the Introit, or entrance chant.
Towards the end of the entrance
chant, once the priest and the
ministers have reached that
sanctuary, they reverence the altar
with a deep bow, a kiss, and if
appropriate, the priest also incenses
the cross and altar. When the
entrance chant is concluded, the
priest stands at the chair and,
together with the whole gathering,
makes the sing of the cross. Then by
means of the Greeting, he signifies
the presence of the Lord to the
assembled community. By this
greeting and the people’s response,
the mystery of the Church gathered
together is made manifest.
After this, the priest calls upon the
whole community to take part in the
penitential act, except when from
time to time on Sundays, the
blessing and sprinkling of water,
traditionally called the Asperges,
may take place as a reminder of our
Baptism. There are several forms for
the penitential rite which either
conclude, or include in some way,
the Kyrie eleison or Lord have
mercy. Originally in Rome, the mass
was celebrated in Greek and the
Kyrie has been carried over from
these early liturgies.
Although we are asked to call to
mind our sins, the emphasis of this
rite is not on our sinfulness, but
rather God’s mercy and salvation.
The sample tropes all refer to
Christ’s redemptive nature: “You
were sent to heal the contrite,” “You
have shown us the way to the
Father,” or “You come in word and
sacrament to strengthen us in
holiness.”
Outside of Advent and Lent, this
declaration of our awareness of
God’s mercy leads into our great
hymn of thankfulness and praise,
the Gloria in Excelsis or “Glory to
God in the Highest.” The Gloria is an
exuberant hymn, opening with
outbursts of praise and joyful cries
addressed to the Father:“We
worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.”The
hymn then goes on to implore the
mercy of the Son, the Lamb of God
who takes away the sins of the
world.
Addressing Christ, the Church
praises him:“You alone are the
Holy One. You alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High.”The
final lines of the Gloria soar into the
blinding mystery of the
Trinity:“Jesus Christ, with the Holy
Spirit, in the glory of God the
Father.”
Next the priest calls upon the people
to pray and pronounces the Collect,
through which the character of the
celebration is summed up and finds
expression. Now, prepared to
receive Christ, we sit and listen to
his Word.
