Inflammation - Friend or Foe?

• Inflammation is the body's response to injury

• The body's way of signaling the immune system to heal and repair damaged tissue, or defend itself against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria.

• Without inflammation, wounds would fester, and infections could become deadly.

• But, if the inflammatory process goes on for too long, can promote chronic disease.

Inflammation – Types• Acute Inflammation:

• Bruises, burns, cuts • Characterized by pain, redness,

immobility swelling and heat. • Will heal within a small amount of time

• Chronic Inflammation: • Age related, environmental stress,

allergies, asthma• Gastrointestinal and high blood

pressure • On-going, pain does not go away
