source of news. Newspapers

employ the most reporters of

any of the media and provide

FAKE NEWSThe “Fake News” popularized by Saturday Night

Live has found a home on Comedy Central with

the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert

Report with Stephen Colbert. Researchers

found that a lot of young people actually get

their news from these shows.

THE BBCThe venerated British Broadcasting

Corporation, which is usually known more

simply as the BBC, began on the radio years

ago and has since

moved to television and the

Internet. Based in England,

it is the world’s largest

broadcasting corporation

with 23,000 employees,

an annual budget of more

than $8 billion and hundreds

of reporters around the world.

PUBLIC BROADCASTINGIn the United Stated there is a publicly funded television network and a publicly funded radio network. Each provides extensive news coverage.

In addition to their nightly news, ABC,

magazines — half hour or hour long

broadcasts that either focus on one

subject with more depth, or three or

ONLY ON THE WEBCurrent TV is a new,progressive media outletfound only on the web.It was started byformer Vice PresidentAl Gore. On January of 2013, Al Jazeera purchased Current TV,retained its off-air staff and launched a new channel called Al Jazeera America.

WEB PORTALSYahoo, Google, MSN and virtually all

other web portals provide extensive

news coverage. Few, if any, actually

have reporters on staff to gather news,

but they provide articles and photos

from news services.

YOUTUBEYouTube, home to millions

of videos on everything from music

videos to people doing stupid stuff just

to get attention, is actually an incredibly

important venue for news. Video clips —

both from national news sources and

average people — provide real

information worldwide.

SOCIAL MEDIATwitter is a recent addition to the news

world where newsmakers, politicians

and celebrities Tweet their thoughts that

are then fodder for news articles.

Everyday citizens use Twitter to report

on what they see around them.

Facebook is also used by newsmakers to

post information, and people around the

world use Facebook to post information.

BLOGOSPHEREWeb logs, or Blogs, are relatively new to

the scene. Established journalists and

average people set up blogs to opine

about whatever their hearts desire.

become influential and can actually

drive the news cycle.

PODCASTS& EMAIL ALERTSMost news sources provide Podcasts, where short clips can be

downloaded to your smartphone to view and share. This is just

one new example of how the availability of news over the

Internet is growing and taking advantage of new technologies.

Most major news sources also provide free e-mail alerts to your

computer or cell phone to keep you up-to-date on news you want

to follow.
