Arts Educator Resources This fall has had a “flurry” of
activities. (Sorry for the poten-
tial snow reference for those
not ready for winter.) There
have been many conferences in
place, online monthly chats,
face to face sessions, institutes
of learning, and conferences
around the state. This issue
offers a look at those activities and provides
several resources for your use. The articles
and links may be helpful in your work with
your professional development plans.
Please keep me posted on additional items
you find that might serve our
students’ needs in arts educa-
tion. Join a WI DPI Arts Google
Community to continue to build
your network and to share ideas.
Thank you again for your work in
arts education. Please continue
to offer your feedback on how
we can enhance arts education in Wisconsin
and the resources that may help
your work. Wishing you and your
family special times in 2016 and a
happy 2017. -Julie

Title: Proportional Grid Drawing Keith Haring Style Submitted by: Kate Clausius of Spring Hill Middle School in the Wisconsin Dells School District Description: Creativity is something students love especially when their teacher gets creative with the project. Seventh grade students at Spring Hill Middle School learn about Keith Haring in their art class. This year I coordinated with the library to have students paint the windows. The lesson was planned when students were learning proportional relationships in math class and creating scaled models in STEM. Students were paired in groups of three or four and worked to draw a Keith Haring image in proportion to the size of the school library windows using a
grid system. This drawing was the rough draft and was taped to the inside of the window and stu-dents then began painting with tempera paint on the outside of the window. The students have been so engaged and are seeing first hand how they can apply what they are learning in math in real life. Not only have the students learned to draw in proportion using a grid, they have also learned how important working as a team is. This project supports standards A.8.1, C.8.6, and I.8.7.
From the Field — Here are lesson ideas from Wisconsin Arts Teachers. Feel free to
email each person with additional questions about their ideas. If you would like to share a strategy for

The Year of Shakespeare in Wisconsin 2016 is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the impact and im-
portance of William Shakespeare and his work with your students during the 400th anniversary of his
death. Shakespeare’s influence in all the artistic areas cannot be understated. Whether it is music, visual
arts, dance, or drama - Shakespeare has left his indelible mark on what we do every day. There are many
wonderful activities and ready-made lesson plans available online at Shakespeare in Wisconsin for Educa-
tors. For more information or if you are interested in creating a special “shakespearience” for your district,
contact Ron Parker, Shakespeare in Wisconsin 2016 K-12 Education Coordinator, at parkerron-
aldc@aasd.k12.wi.us. Details
This year’s 26th festival was hosted by UW - Stevens Point.
