First and Second Grade Classes

Welcome, parents!

Welcome to Park Street! We would like to

introduce you to your child’s classroom and some of our routines.

If you have any questions, please stop us.

Our Goals To give your children the academic and

social skills they need. To provide a supportive and fun

classroom environment. To help your children make new friends

and discover new interests. To foster a love of learning.

Our Classrooms: “Home Away From Home” We want your children to feel safe and cared

for when they are away from you. In our “Home Away From Home”, we have rules to help us get along with each other.

Our class rules are: Treat others how you would like to be treated. Listen to the speaker and wait your turn. Come to school on time and with everything you

will need for the day.

Class Subjects The subjects your children participate in are:

Literacy Math You and Your World Physical Education Art Music French Culture

Reading Our team follows a balanced

literacy approach, including:

-Read alouds,

-Shared reading,

-Flexible guided reading groups

-Independent reading

Writing Continuing with the

balanced literacy approach, writing consists of:

-Word work

-Spelling practice

-Modeled writing

-Shared writing

-Flexible guided writing

-Independent writing

Fast ForWord to Reading Fast ForWord is a computer reading series

that targets essential reading skills: -Phonemic Awareness-Phonics & Decoding-Spelling-Fluency-Vocabulary-ComprehensionIt is based on research on how the brain learns and brain plasticity including the connection between reading and language.

Empowering Learners Intervention

This intervention targets students in Grades 1 and 2 who are reading slightly below their grade level. A small group of students is taken out of the class for a portion of the day for a twenty-day intervention to boost their literacy skills. Students have shown great gains as a result of participating in this intervention. If your child is participating in this intervention, there will be homework given by Mrs. McKenna-Dacres each week day in lieu of regular Literacy homework.

Math Students will work on

monthly outcomes, as well as, regularly review concepts learned in previous months.

The students will also work with mental math and number and word problems.

You and Your World This subject

incorporates health, personal development, career planning, science and social studies all in one.

Physical Education We are very pleased to

have Physical Education specialists, Erin McAuley and Jonathan Crossland, in the school to teach your children. Your child receives Phys. Ed. instruction in the gym 3 times each week.

Art We follow the

prescribed outcomes using many different art materials that relate to stories we have read, favourite illustrators, science and the world around us.

Music

Mr. Jeffery Zaat is a musician and your child’s teacher. Your child receives Music instruction twice each week.

French Culture

Your child will receive exposure to French culture through music, books and vocabulary 30 minutes each week.

Homework We will assign homework each Monday. Math and

Literacy will be the focus of homework. Please have your child read each night.

The Homework duo-tang is due each Friday morning.

If your child needs extra time to work on the homework assignment, write us a note in the Agenda saying that you would like to keep the Homework duo-tang over the weekend.

Agenda We will be checking

the Agenda each

morning for your

initials and any notes

that you want us to

see. Loose notes

often get missed.

Tardiness School starts at 8:10 A.M. and ends at

1:55 P.M.; Wednesdays at 12:10 P.M. Did you know? If your child arrives at

8:30 each morning, over the year, it is the equivalent of 14.5 days absent.

That’s almost 3 entire weeks of valuable learning time…GONE!

Snacks Please send along a healthy

recess snack with your child’s lunch.

Please enjoy your peanut butter and nut snacks at home. Parents with severely allergic children thank you.

Field TripsWe have some fun field trips planned for this year!

Kings Landing

Ducks Unlimited

Hospital Visit (Grade 1)

Year-end Class Trips

*Please note: For every field trip, we will need at least 1 adult for every 5 students, with at least 1 of the adults being male. Please sign up for as
