Five Marks of a

Real DiscipleDisciple

Marks of a Real Disciple

• “Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-- yes, even his own life-- he cannot be my disciple.

• And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

• "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

• "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

• "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Levels of Intimacy

CrowdCongregationChurchCommitted

A Family: Love Jesus Supremely

• Image of family• Hate: father, mother, wife, children,

• See the cross for what it is.• It is not a difficulty in your life.• The message of the cross is death.• I love your electric chair, where did you

get it?• Have you seen my James Avery lethal

injection syringe?• In Jesus’ time, it was a horrible

agonizing tortuous mode of execution

A Cross: Live Like a Dead Person

• Dead Man Walking• He is alive and walking- but he’s as good as

dead.• We should start acting as dead people,• Galatians 2:20; 5:24; 6:14• Nothing the world has to offer interests the

disciple of Christ

A Cross: Live Like a Dead Person

• Bonhoeffer- “The cross is laid on every Christian. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death- we give our lives to death. The cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise god-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” (The Cost of Discipleship, p. 99)

• In many ways a dead man is set free.

A Tower: Consider the Value of a Good Finish

• Count the Cost• Do I have enough to finish?• Phil 1:6• African houses• Will you finish well?• It doesn’t matter how many times you get to

the “one yard line”.• A real disciple finishes strong.

A War: Surrender to the Stronger King

• Two kings. One is out numbered.• King Agrippa II and Bernice• Because we can never win against God, we

must surrender to Him.• It take humility to surrender to Jesus.• You cannot be a disciple unless you are willing

to give up control of your life to Jesus.• Life-guard
