Welcome to a lovely Autumn edition and this month sees the start of National Tree Week. With trees in mind I spent a lovely few hours at Westonbirt Arboretum recently and am planning a return visit soon when the Acers are really at their best. We just need a few cold evenings (so I’m in-formed!) for the leaves to really start turning.
Unfortunately, (or not you may be thinking) due to some very late adverts arriving and, quite rightly taking precedence, my letter space has been greatly reduced so look forward to rattling on a little longer next month! Catherine

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Wednesday evening, the weather was unremarkable, not to say dull as we drove out of Stroud through Brimscombe to arrive at the spacious Pavilion car park. Daylight was fading and the restaurant beamed out light and warmth as we approached the door-my en-during memory of The Pavilion encompasses brightness and cleanliness. The whole place is relaxing, neat and harmonious down to the background music which takes me into the pages of a Somerset Maugham short story.
The darkly uniformed waiters greeted us with a smile and ushered us to a table crisply dressed in red and white table cloths. We are offered, and accept some initial drinks of red wine for my compan-ion (very palatable) and a mango lassi for myself-a refreshing ex-perience I will repeat. We bury ourselves in the extremely compre-hensive menu accompanied by some poppodums (my favourite) with the usual four dips. As the waiters flit by serving other cus-tomers they have the time and patience to answer our several questions, even though they must have heard them many times before! We select our starters, my companion chooses fresh garlic mushrooms, which she describes as a meal in itself and my choice was the Crab chops which are fish cakes with a suitably deli-cate salad-a good start!
My main course is Chicken Tikka Masala with special fried rice and a side dish of spinach bhaji-so beautifully presented it seemed a pity to eat it-but my reluctance lasted only for a moment!

An Indian Night at The Pavilion For the next course my companion chose vegetable dhansak with pilau rice (a vegetarian option of which there are many!), the por-tion was too much for her but I found it delicious!
The attentive waiter checked if there was a problem because of the amount left and we explained that it was down to personal capacity and not the food!
Our waiter cleared the debris away quickly and offered us luxury ice cream desserts, in-cluding ’Barry the Elephant-a new friend for kids filled with loveable ice-cream!’. We re-sisted the temptation of the desserts and enjoyed the sen-sation of warm damp flannels to wipe our hands–these al-ways remind me of long-ago plane journeys-before cheap flights and Ryan Air!
Dreamings of old imperial palaces, maharajas tigers and the lost empire, I waddled off into the night, wondering how many addition-al miles I would need to cover to run it all off the following morning. A delightful experience!
The restaurant was very busy, as was the take-away trade. This was no surprise and apart from the excellence of the food, on Wednesdays they offer a starter, main course with side dish, naan or rice followed by tea or coffee at just £12.95 per person! There is also 10% off the standard take-away prices. All meals are cooked with vegetables oils and vegetable ghee with no animal fats, spices are prepared fresh each day. Well worth a visit!

For many, the departure of summer and the arrival of the autumn, bringing with it rain, wind and cold snaps, may feel like an awful time. You have to dig out your knitted jumpers from the back of your closet and your wellington boots and umbrella are permanently sitting by the front door. And your skin and hair are just unmanageable. Well don’t despair. There are some great things that you can do and treat yourself to in order to help you prepare yourself for these long, cold months ahead.
One thing to try and prepare for winter is your skin. During these dark few months, sun-light is in small proportions, leaving skin looking dull and feeling dry. So before these effects begin to show why not treat yourself to a Warm Paraffin Wax Treatment. How this works is that parts of your body are covered with the paraffin wax and left for a period of time to work its magic. It can helps to soothe aches and pains and also nourishes your skin. Once the wax is peeled of slowly, you will notice that your skin feels completely rejuvenated. This is the perfect way to prepare your skin for the brutality that is winter.
Hands and feet are also victims of seasonal change. Hands can become dry and sore. And feet, well most of us cover them up in warm snuggly socks, so barely take note of them. But once the socks come off you notice dry skin and chipped or barely there nail polish. Above it was mentioned how paraffin wax can rejuvenate your skin and this works for your hands and feet too. This can be used in conjunction with a manicure and pedicure, to ensure that your hands and feet both look and feel amazing this autumn. And when its time to choose the all-important colour for your nails, you can either embrace the change and go for autumn shades of reds, oranges and browns. Or you can refuse to accept sum-mer is gone and opt for the bright colours of summer.
If you go to all the trouble of booking a treatment, or you don’t have the time or cash to spend on such things, you can do some work at home yourself. All you need to do is buy some good quality moisturising creams, such as the Hydropeptide Moisturise Firming Hydrator and you are away. This product can get rid of dry elbows, hands and can also help those who are still a little sun damaged from summer. This product can brighten your skin as well as moisturise it. And it is so quick and easy to apply that this can easily be fitted into your beauty regime, saving you both time and money in the long run if your skin succumbs to the harsh reality that is winter.
So whether you like to stay indoors, under your duvet watching movies this autumn or you are one to explore the great outdoors and all its beauty, following these treatments can ensure that your skin feels great through these next few months, and when spring finally arrives you can bare your legs with confidence. And if you like the treatments so much, why not gift one to a friend this Christmas? Apparently it’s only 72 days away!

It’s about ideas and how best to put them on paper. You serve up an idea and we’ll see if we can return it with interest.
We’ve been printing and helping people to get their ideas off the ground for ages.
Books that have been gathering brain dust for years have been brought to life on our presses.
Business ideas have been mulled over, designed and printed.Marketing plans put into action and work
generated for everyone involved.
As part of Severnprint, with all their resources, we specialise in helping those with small ideas
to develop them and make them bigger and better.
We’re here to serve.

Apparently families no longer take responsibility for teaching their children ‘right and wrong’, so our children no longer have any ac-countability; Hundreds of thousands of elderly people are lonely and without regular social contact.; These two recent news items highlight the general malaise within our society. The role models put about by our media are the famous (whether by appearance on reality tv or as a result of actual talent) or the self-made, self-interested man or woman. The actual reality that genuine happi-ness is brought about by giving and caring about others quietly and without publicity, never gets a look in. Our focus is all on the inconsequential and transient aspects of living, not on the crucial elements
Since the fading of religious belief, there is little focus in education on philosophy, moral or social ideals. No wonder the vast majority have no idea of consideration for others, let alone the planet. Consideration is not self-taught, “What’s in it for me?” is the princi-ple philosophy of our society today. As all other species struggle to exist under the continuing pressure on this planet, exerted by ever increasing human demands and numbers, we carry on re-gardless. You would have thought the confirmation that climate change is 95% certain to have been caused by the human race might be a chastening statistic-not a bit! It’s all too much too late and we can’t do anything about it, so let’s forget it.
Well, the sensible answer is yes, we can do something about it and if we all stopped being so negative (including looking for new sources of fossil fuels) we could take up by far the biggest chal-lenge that has ever faced the human race and demonstrate to ourselves that we are the highly intelligent, imaginative and crea-tive animals that we profess we are. We need to get on with it and instil in our children a passion for ideals and a change in our society and our environment for the benefit of all species. As it is, our inertia and abject refusal to take the situation seriously says much about our over-inflated opinion of ourselves and little for our long-term existence on this planet.

23rd November-1st Dec is National Tree Week
Considering that most people in Britain have fairly small plots we do love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them. How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed a zonking great weeping willow or an enormous pine tree obscuring the front garden.
For my money Amelanchier Lamarckii is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it produces a frothy show of white flowers, then in June these are replaced by attractive, deep purple fruits which are supposedly edible - though I’ve never tried them. Then, when Autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops and bursts into fiery colour. If you only have room for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down. The blue-green leaves turn red in the autumn.
It’s just my opinion of course, but without at least one tree, a garden can seem flat and a little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life. Why not plant a tree during this week?
Indeed there are only seven days in a week but the Tree Council, who organise National Tree Week, tend to slip in a few extra when no-one is watching!

A Peek into the Past On November 5th 1991 the body of the millionaire newspaper publisher, Robert Maxwell, was found in the sea off the coast of Tenerife. The publisher had been cruising in the Canary Isles aboard his luxury yacht, the Ghislaine.
He was thought to have gone overboard early in the morning but was not reported missing until he failed to answer a telephone several hours later. Two helicopters, rescue launches and a dozen ships assisted in the search.
Maxwell was born into relative poverty in Czechoslovakia but became one of Britain’s richest men, buying the Daily Mirror Newspaper in 1984. He was an abrasive character whose business methods were often criticized. Indeed, after his death it emerged that the Mirror Group's debts vastly outweighed its assets and £440m was missing from the company's pension funds.
In 1996 Maxwell’s sons, Kevin and Ian along with another man, Larry Trachtenberg, were cleared of conspiracy to defraud Mirror Group pensioners after an eight month trial.
In 2001 the Department of Trade and Industry released a report into the Maxwell affair which said "primary responsibility" for the collapse of the Maxwell business empire lay with its founder.
30,000 Mirror Group pensioners mounted a three-year campaign for compensation. Their funds were largely recovered thanks to a £100m government payout and a £276m out-of-court settlement with City institutions and the remnants of Robert Maxwell's media group.
