Five Ways to Sharpen Your Design Skills
Greg Vennerholm@gvennerholm
The Value of Design
1. Be Consistent
COTM Brand Relaunch
It doesn’t mean being “the same” all the time... but rather develop a framework that you can rely on over time. It will save your bacon when you’re
up against the wall on a deadline.
Typefaces, colors, background treatments, compositions... all of these help you design more
quickly, and more consistent.
It means that when you do something special, it will really stand apart...
!
Think: church brand vs. series titles.

2. Don’t Settle
Don’t let yourself stop pushing too soon... keep thinking, breaking it down, considering
new ways to solve the problem. !
Then do it again.
Step away from it, and come back later. !
We often get things to a point where we’re “comfortable” with where it is,
but we know that “something” isn’t quite right, yet.
Don’t stand in the way of someone else helping solve the problem, put a brush
in everyone’s hand.
Amazing Grace Series
Different Series
It still sucked.
3. Restrain Yourself
Many designers want to get tricky with their design,
but simplicity usually wins out.
Going Deeper Series
4. Learn How Type Works
Bad typography can kill your project, great typography makes you a hero.
Sweat the details: apostrophes, hanging punctuation, ligatures… learn what these are, and how to use them... it’s the easiest way to elevate your design.
Ideal Family Series
5. Style Isn’t Design
Style is what something looks like... Design is a visual solution to a problem.
!
Fixing the first without considering the second assures you that your project will not have a lasting impact.
Style is all about “treatment.” That drop shadow you love, the colors you can’t get away from, the typeface you saw in a store window.
Don’t get hung up in the style until you figure out what
problem you need to solve.
6. Steal. But don’t copy.
It’s okay to find inspiration in others’ work. We do. All the time.
!
Don’t clone it… they were solving their own problems…
not yours.
