ROAD NETWORK IN INDIA

India has a road network of over 3.314 million kilometres of roadway.

Third largest road network in the world. As of 2008, only 49% of the network consisted of

paved roads.India plans to spend approximately US$70 Billion

by 2013 to modernize its highway network.Primary material required for road construction

are rubble, boulder, murrum, aggregate and bitumen.

PLASTIC,GROWTH RATE,EFFECTS

PLASTIC

SYNTHETIC OR SEMI-SYNTHETIC,POLYMERS OF HIGH MASS

DERIVED FROM PETROCHEMICAL IN 2010-12MILLION TONS

TILL 2015-34MILLION TONSIN INDIA ONLY

OVER 22 MILLION TONS OF PLASTICS DISCARDED EACH YEAR IN THE TRASH

60%-RECYCLE(6.5 IS RECYCLED)40%-NON-RECYCLE

PLASTIC IS NON-BIODEGRADABLE DUE TO ITS (C=C) STRONG BONDING,AFFECTS FERTILITY.

DISPOSAL BYLAND FILLS OR INCINERATION

RELEASE VERY TOXIC GASES SUCH AS CO, CO2

BITUMEN PLASTIC

Asphalt -Crude Petroleum

Residue From Distillation Of Crude Oil

Composed Of Highly Condensed Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon

Have Good Binding Property

Synthetic or Semi-synthetic

Most Plastics Are Produced From Petrochemicals

Polymers Of Ethylene, Propylene, styrene..Etc

Molten Plastic Waste Exhibits Good Binding Property.

RESULTS

Comparison between plain bitumen and modified bitumen (10% plastic waste):

COMPARISON

Material cost comparison for 1km road

Total material cost reduction=7.99%

plastic model was successful on major roads in Bangalore 0f about 600 km of roads1. Shankar Mutt Road, 2. K H Road, 3. M G Road (towards Trinity Circle), 4. J C Nagar Road, Miller's Road,5. Cunningham Road, 6. Rajarajeshwari Junction,

CONCLUSIONThe polymer bitumen blend is a better binder compared to

plain bitumen. Increase the durability and performance Increased Softening Point and decreased Penetration Value

with a suitable ductility. When used for road construction it can withstand higher

temperature. Hence it is suitable for tropical regions. It has decreased Penetration Value. Hence its load carrying

capacity is increased. No toxic gas is produced. Disposal of waste plastic will no longer be a problem. It is a good saving too. Hence, A better road can be constructed by using waste

plastics .
