Book of the Month

Club EventsBook Introduction and Reading
We were very lucky
to hold the Canadian
introduction of the
new book, “Con
Beano nel Cuore”, at
the Fogolar on
Monday, October 23.
This was an event
organized by Lou and
Iola Ienna, and we
thank them for reaching out to the Fogolar in order to hold this
event at the club. It was an exciting evening, and there were a
good number of people on hand to celebrate this occasion.
Maddalena Mizzau, the author, travelled from Friuli to Canada to
share her new book. The book was released in Italy earlier this
month. The Canadian introduction of the book took place at the
Fogolar, and there will be an American introduction in the next
few weeks. The event was very interesting as those in atten-
dance were able to hear the author speak about her book and
how she was inspired to write it. Then the audience was treated
to excerpts of the book, read in English, Italian and Furlan, by
three of our Fogolar members. Thank you to Iola Ienna, Elver
Peruzzo, and Marisa DeFranceschi for being a part of this event
and doing a wonderful job with the readings. Ms. Mizzau has
also graciously donated a signed copy of the book to the Fogolar
library.
The book is currently not available for purchase in Canada, but
she will work with her publisher to find a way to have those inter-
ested in purchasing a copy to be able to do so. We wish her
continued success with her writing.
Trunk-or-Treat
The Trunk-or-Treat event continues to be a successful event for
the Fogolar to attract families with children to the club. This
event was held on Friday, October 27 and was open to Fogolar
members, families, friends and the community. The weather may
have deterred some people from coming out, but we still had 50
happy children and their families brave the cold and rainy weath-
er. The children were able to make some spooky Halloween
lantern crafts, decorate a small pumpkin to take home, and of
course trick-or-treat around the parking lot at the Fogolar. The
parking lot next to the Pavilion was blocked off so the children
could go safely from trunk to trunk of the participating cars col-
lecting candy and goodies.
There were lots of laughs
and many smiles. The chil-
dren and their families
were happy with the event,
and thanked the Fogolar
for putting on such a child-
friendly event for the com-
munity. Hopefully, next
year we will see more cars
out in the parking lot
handing out candy for
the kids! Thank you
to everyone who was
able to come out and
participate. A special
thank you to Erica
Pecile-Morand,
Miranda Guarasci,
and Franca Volpatti for organizing, setting up and helping with
parking that night!
Holiday Family Skate
Once again, the Fogolar has booked the ice at Lanspeary Park
to celebrate the holidays with a Family Skate event! This event
will take place on December 28th. We have the ice booked from
10 am until noon, and as always, the skating is free to attend.
There will be hot chocolate on hand to keep everyone warm and
lots of good times with great friends. Afterwards, the Fogolar is
hosting a buffet lunch at the club to keep the festivities going.
The lunch is free for those sixteen and under, and $15 for those
over sixteen years of age. This is always a fun event for the fam-
ilies of the Fogolar, and we
hope to see many people
come out again this year!
Gnocchi class
The Fogolar held a gnocchi
class Friday September 29
and it was a success. There
were about 20 people who
registered and came to
make homemade gnocchi. It
was the first time for some
people. Everyone seemed
to enjoy making them as
well as eating them after-
wards. We would like to
thank our member Rino
Bortolin for teaching the
class.
Volunteer Hours:
For any high school stu-
dents looking to get some
community service/volun-
teer hours, the Fogolar is a
great place to do that. We have many events throughout the
year where we could use some assistance. These range from
children’s events to cleaning up the Fogolar grounds and helping
to tidy up the North Service Road. If you are interested in volun-
teering for any of these events, stay tuned to the newsletter for
information, or contact dvolpatti@fogolar.com to put your name
down as someone who would like to be contacted when these
opportunites arise. Volunteer hours look great on your school
community service logs, resumes, and especially if you are
planning to apply for a Fogolar Scholarship, as Club involve-
ment is always an important component for consideration.
Alpini convention in August at the Fogolar
A.N.A. Sezione of Windsor hosted the 19th Alpini Convention
of North America, August 18, 19, and 20th. This was also the
50th Anniversary for the Sezione of Windsor (1967-2017).
This event was attended by Alpini from all over North America
and Italy. The festivities started on Friday August 18th with a
flag raising ceremony at City Hall, followed by lunch at the
Fogolar Furlan Club and on to a Winery Tour in the afternoon.
On Saturday, August 19th before heading out to a Windsor-
Detroit River Cruise, the Alpini enjoyed a traditional Alpini
breakfast. Sunday August 20th started with a Mass at St.
Angela Merici Church followed with a parade at the Fogolar
Furlan Club where respect was paid to all deceased Alpini in
front of their monument. A gala dinner took place afterwards.
A good time was had by all Alpini and friends.
Self-Defence
Our self-defence classes will continue this fall. We will hold a
few more classes before Christmas. The next classes will be
held Monday November 13 at 7:00 pm, Monday November 27
at 7:00 and Monday December 11 at 7:00. The classes are
free, informative and fun. We would like to thank our members
and instructors Ernie and Daniel Del Pup for their time and
enthusiasm.

The Fogolar will hold its Fogolar Blood Donation Week
November 13-18. Members and friends can donate blood on
behalf of the Fogolar. Then, fill out a ballot for your chance to
win a pair of dinner tickets. Also the Fogolar Blood Drive will
be held Thursday, November 16, between 6:30-7:30 pm. We
would like to register between 8-10 people. Donors are invited
back to the club for a free pizza. To register for November 16

It all started almost twelve
years ago, when Jeff Nadalin
and I produced the first “Youth
Spectator” for inclusion into
the January 2006 Fogolar
News. Little did we know it
would be the catalyst for a
brand new era of the Fogolar
News, with a refreshed
design, updated layout, colour
photos, and an online digital
version. Sixty-two editions
later and still it’s a mad flurry
of activity come the deadline
date, as if each month was
our very first edition!
Producing the newsletter
takes a team of many people.
I’d like to thank all of the con-
tributors who have written arti-
cles and provided photos for
the newsletter. I’d like to thank
those of you who had encour-
aging words in those very
early days when change was
happening. I’d like to thank
the office staff for finding time
to print the newsletter on a
moment’s notice during their
hectic schedule. I’d like to
thank Tim Sellan who joined
me this year to help organize
the content for each edition.
And most of all I’d like to
thank Vanna de Zorzi and her
group of stuffers & packers -
without them the newsletter
would never get to you.
Thanks for reading,
