FOLDEDPLATES
Folded plates are assemblies of flat plates rigidly connected together aloin such a way so as to make the structural system capable of carrying loaneed for additional supporting beams along mutual edges.
They consist of flat coor plates, that are inte

Understandingthe basicfunctioning offolded plates.
The effect of folding platescan be visualized with a sheetof paper. A paper deformseven under its own weight.Folding the paper adds
strength and stiffness; yetunder heavy loads the foldsmay buckle. Securing thefolds at both ends, increasesstability against buckling.

FOLDEDPLATEBEHAVIOUR
Folded plates combineslab action with beamaction. In lengthdirection they act likethin inclined beams ofgreat depth, stabilizedagainst buckling at topand bottom by adjoiningplates. In width directionthey are one-way slabsthat span betweenadjacent plates.

FOLDEDPLATEBEHAVIOUR
Bending in folded platescauses top compressionand bottom tension.Folded plates also tendto flatten out under
gravity load, which maybe prevented by wallsor frames at endsupports. Tendency ofend buckling can beresisted by edgebeams.

ADVANTAGES
The distinguishing feature of the folded plate is the ease in formingplane surfaces. Therefore, they are more adaptable to smallerareas than curved surfaces which require multiple use of forms formaximum economy.
A folded plate may be formed for about the same cost as ahorizontal slab and has much less steel and concrete for the samespans.
Provide strength, stiffness, and stability with minimum weight.

TYPESOFFOLDEDPLATES: FOLDINGTECHNIQ
Longitudinal /Prismatic folding:
Longitudinal folding is characterizedthrough uninterrupted and linked foldingedges where parallel and skew up foldsand down folds alternate
Single-layered longitudinal foldingcorresponds in their load bearing structure
to a linear load bearing system.
Double-layered folding with differentdirections of their folds can create thestructural condition of the plate.
Spot / facet fold
Spot or facet folding requireintersect like a bunch in oneresults in pyramidal folds witfacet-like planes. Facet fold
based on a triangular shapquadrangular shape.
A single or double-layered fresembles the load bearingplate and can be compareframeworks.

GUNMAMUSICCENTER
This Gunma music center for the Gunma Philharmonic Orchestra, consist of a folded plate concrete roof of 60 m span and foldedplate walls, that form frames to resist gravity and lateral loads. The architect, a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesintook the challenge to design the center for the followingrequirements :
The center had to be fire and earthquake proof
Good acoustics for music center.
Provide for Kabuki performances that required a revolving stage.
The folded plate roof is 3.3 m deep for a span/depth ratio of1:18. Two wings flanking the stage for meeting and green rooms, also have folded plate roofs.

Horizontal folds are 2.4m deep and span 33.5m with a platethickness of 10cm increasing to 15cm near the supports.
Inside the hall, a 'seating bowl' with a capacity of 700 issupported on an independent structure.
Sculptural columns and cantilevers of this bowl dominate thelobby area.
