Public health impacts

• 5-a-day went up 5%

• 4-a-day went up 12%

• 45% parents eating more vegetables as direct result of FFL

• 43% parents changed food shopping behaviour

Food for Life Catering Mark

• No undesirable additives or trans fats

• 75% freshly prepared

• All meat meets British welfare standards

• Eggs from cage-free hens

• Seasonal menus

• No fish from the ‘fish to avoid’ list

• Free drinking water prominently available

• No GM ingredients

• Information on display about where food comes from

• Training for all catering staff

Success so far

• Over 600,000 meals per day = 110 million meals each year

• Over 100 pioneering business directly involved as members

• 28 Local Authorities – in house –going up.

• 49 Commercial catering businesses

• Over 20% of all schools meals meet the Catering Mark criteria (England)

• More than 75% London boroughs
