Over the last years the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (one of Europe’s leading audiovisual archives) has become the largest GLAM contributor of video on Wikimedia Commons through their “Open Images” project. These items are being used in a total of 3.600 articles across 70 different language versions of Wikipedia. Sound and Vision has also contributed sounds in a project called “Sound of the Netherlands” and were involved in projects such as “Wiki Loves Public Art” through their partnering in Europeana Awareness. To expand this succesful co-operation with Wikimedia Netherlands and the wider community of Wikipedia, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision decided to appoint a GLAM-wiki coordinator. He has been active in facilitating new content donations, engaging with the community of Wikipedia in order to contextualize the content donated and educating staff about the possibilities of the platforms of Wikimedia.

Video and Wikimedia? We are just scratching the surface!

SOUND AND VISION & OPEN CONTENT

- From digitisation to making available- From providing end-user services to facilitation- ‘Open, unless’ policy for our own collections- Actively marking the public domain material- First attempts at negotiating allowing for reuse

OPEN IMAGES

“Open Images is an open media platform that offers online access to audiovisual archive material to stimulate creative reuse.”

- Research started in 2009 (WMNL provided advise)

- Open on every level- Functions as an infrastructure for reuse

IMPACT OF VIDEO ON WIKIPEDIA

2013- Number of items on Wikimedia Commons

- 1,600

- Number of articles on Wikipedia- 2,000

- Number of language versions- 70

- Number of views

-50,000,000!!!13-04-2023

NUMBERS IN PERSPECTIVE

- Length of entire S&V archive: 800,000h∼- Length of ‘our’ newsreel collection: 500h∼- Length of material in Open Images: 110h∼

- i.e.:- 22% of ‘our’ newsreel collection available

through Open Images,- which is 0.014% of our entire archive.

AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT & WIKIMEDIA

- Video on Wikimedia/Wikipedia is not established (Andrew Lih, Peter B. Kaufman)

- Currently less than 50,000 videos on Commons- Sound and Vision has contributed ~2,200 videos

through Open Images (almost 5%)

- So video currently remains an area for Sound and Vision to make a significant contribution

- With our Wikimedia Coordinator we are experimenting with different strategies

OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES

• Workshops• Editathon• Content donations• Improve visibility on Wikimedia platforms• Improve measurability of impact

INDICATORS OF SUCCESS

• New articles• More views• Increase in re-use• Improved visibility• More traffic• Edits to metadata• Participants at events

Activity Result

Editathon 30 participants, 20 new articles

4 Workshops (Wikidata/Wikipedia) 40 participants

Contentdonations 500+ videos donated (2000+ will follow soon)

OVERVIEW OF RESULTS - qualitative

• Improved metadata• Better relationships with other GLAM

institutions and stakeholders• Improved technological infrastructure• Awareness within the institute• Etc.

CONTENT STRATEGIES

• large-scale vs. small scale • related to existing Wikimedia project vs.

unrelated • Incidental batch vs. incremental • Specific theme vs. broad scope • categorized vs. uncategorized

Within one week (!):• Latin bird names

added as categories• English bird names in

metadata• Almost half of the

items used in articles• 1 item used in 54

languages

3. STRATEGIES – Conclusions

13-04-2023

• Uploaduploadupload!• Notify the community• Stimulating re-use not always feasible• Something is better than nothing• Short-term success is more likely with

stimulating re-use.
