• Court painter for King Carlos IV de España• Became deaf in 1792 – his style changed
and became more satirical • Characteristics of his works:• 1) painted scenes of everyday life• 2) only roughly indicated the background• 3) loved to use the color black

are built there)• His style is difficult to classify because he
was so modern for his time • Designed parks, apartment buildings, etc.• Died when hit by a trolley

changing styles• Blue Period- characterized by shades of blue
(depression in his life)• Rose Period- characterized by shades of pink
and red (fun times/ many circus performers were his topic)
• Most famous style- cubism- characterized by many geometric shapes (very abstract and modern)
• Influenced by the Spanish Civil War (1930’s)
