A self drive tour combining time in Adelaide, the most English-elegant of all Australia’s cities with four of the country’s leading wine producing areas: the Barossa, the McLaren Vale, the Clare Valley and the Adelaide Hills.
Many of Australia’s vineyards offer much more than simply a chance to learn how their wines are made and sample them.
Australia’s unspoilt landscapes produce an incredibly wide variety of fresh and tantalising produce. There’s also a freedom and creativity to its food and wine culture that helps us produce fresh and innovative flavours, including wines that are the envy of the world, as well as exciting ingredients and ‘fusion’ food. But what really sets it apart is the place - the stunning weather, sunshine, outstanding natural beauty and outdoor dining lifestyle means you can enjoy some of the world’s best food and wine in some of the world’s most enticing surroundings. Australia does al fresco dining like nowhere else.

Australia’s classic three-part itinerary is a mix of a luxury stay in Sydney, a taste of the Outback topped by Uluru its most famous topographical feature, and Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef, the country’s three world wonder icons in one neat trinity of a package. All seen and done in top-end comfort. It’s our best-selling holiday Down Under and everyone who’s booked it has loved it.

Although most of us would suffer from hypothermia at the mere thought of a dip in the sea on Christmas morning, enjoying a swim and a sunbathe on the beach before lunch epitomise the pleasures of a winter break Down Under. This holiday combines the delights of Sydney with a few days in Noosa with its stunning surf beaches and a stay on idyllic Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.
Days 1-5: There are many wonderful hotels in Sydney but the Shangri-La, with its spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge,is one of our favourites. It’s the perfect place from which to explore the shops and restaurants, and soak up the ambience and outdoor lifestyle of Sydney. As well as the city itself, we suggest spending a day or two at one of the nearby beaches, and visiting some of the many other local attractions.
Days 1- 4: Such is the breadth of attractions in Sydney that you could enjoy a wonderful family holiday in Australia and never set forth beyond the city’s boundaries.
Days 6-7: Ayers Rock is Australia’s most extraordinary natural site combining Uluru and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). You’ll stay at Longitude 131°, the most exclusive of the properties within sight and easy reach of the Rock. It is a luxurious, tented resort and although the fifteen tents are perched on an isolated sand dune, they’re all air-conditioned, with proper windows and a veranda offering uninterrupted views.
Days 5-7: Noosa is a great spot for families. Aside from its surf beaches and lively town with lots of cafés and restaurants, you can rent a car and explore the surrounding, scenically delightful, countryside, and visit the Australia Zoo, run by Steve Irwin’s family, where you can cuddle a koala and hand feed an elephant.
Days 8-13 Lizard Island Resort is in a national park with miles of signposted bush trails. Combine these natural assets with impeccable service and superb, ‘fresh from the Reef’ food and you have an island escape that’s hard to match anywhere in the world. Accommodation is in 40 rooms, all with views of the beach, plus a spa, a gym and a pool. Utterly beautiful.Day 14: Fly back to Cairns.
Days 8-10: I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! was set in the rainforest of Southern Queensland. You’ve seen it on the telly, now check out the real thing. You’ll be able to commune with wildlife – minus Ant and Dec, but including pandemelons, frogs, possums, and an amazing array of birds.
Days 11-14: Hamilton Island is Australia’s best loved escape for families, with a heap of activities ranging from cookery and pottery for the grown-ups, frog spotting and ‘mud madness’ for the kids, and fun jaunts around the island in your own golf buggy. We can also book trips out to the Great Barrier Reef or famous Whitehaven Beach.

TRAVEL ABOARD THE LEGENDARY GHAN An Outback expedition from Darwin to Adelaide
Spend 4 days travelling through the heart of Australia’s
Outback aboard The Ghan Expedition.
Day 1: All aboard. On your first day travel from Darwin
to Katherine, where you can take a leisurely cruise on
the idyllic Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, gazing at the
towering sandstone cliffs, and learning about the
Aboriginal and geologi cal history of the area.
Day 2: Early risers. Wake up to the incredible Outback
sunrise as you enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before
arriving in Alice Springs. A full day gives you ample
opportunity to visit the town and see Australia’s incredible
flora and fauna. In the evening, dine beneath a canopy
of stars at an authentic Outback Bush Barbecue, with
live Australian music, followed by an informative
astronomical talk as you cast your eyes skyward.
Day 3: Go underground. We pull into the middle-of-
nowhere stop at Manguri where you’ll be whisked away
by your friendly tour guide for a visit to the sun-scorched
opal mining capital of the world, Coober Pedy, where
more than half of the residents live underground.
Day 4: From Outback to city. Looking out of your
window this morning you’ll notice a dramatic change in
landscape as the rich ochre tones of the Outback make
way for the beautiful green fields and pastoral lands of
South Australia before The Ghan rolls into Adelaide.
With a coastline that’s almost as long as the earth’s circumference, it’s hardly surprising that Australia offers some of the most exciting coastal cruising in the world. And, in our view, there’s no better way to enjoy it than aboard True North, with North Star cruises.
Purpose-built to access Australia’s wilderness, where bigger ships cannot
go, True North features an onboard helicopter for unrivalled access to some of the most remote parts of the coast. She also features the highest levels of onboard comfort and luxury. Guest numbers are limited to just 36, and an Australian crew of 20 is on hand to provide a truly personal service to each one.
Call us to find out more about adding one of North Star’s unique and exceptional cruises to your itinerary.

The Great Barrier Reef is the subject of a new 3 part BBC documentary in which Sir David Attenborough returns to this incredible natural phenomenon sixty years after his first visit.
With most of its population living within 20 minutes of the ocean, it’s no wonder Australia’s spectacular coastline and golden beaches play such a prominent part in life Down Under. There are in fact some 7000 beaches at the last official count and they are among the sandiest, silkiest and whitest on the planet. There are beaches on which you can drive (Fraser Island), ride a camel (Broome), sandboard
down dunes (Stockton), feed dolphins (Monkey Mia), escape the crowd (Cape Leveque), see the whitest sands in the world
(Hyams), meet Kangaroos (Pebbly Beach) and of course, surf (at Bondi most famously).
With the Indian Ocean as its western border and the Pacific on the east, Australia is neighbour to some of the most
spectacular seas in the world, both above and below the surface.
As you head inland the lush coastal lands of Australia are transformed into the rugged reds of its Outback. No ‘walkabout’ in Australia is complete without stepping into this majestic wilderness that is at the country’s heart and which touches each of its states. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular natural landscapes, amazing wildlife and the cultural heritage of its native aboriginals.
The Wheatbelt in Western Australia’s Golden Outback, near Hyden, is home to magnificent Wave Rock, a giant curved rock face that bears a striking resemblance to a wave about to crash over the surrounding bushland. INTO THE
