Head of Anglican Church of Canada visits■ By Paloma MigoneSPECIAL TO THE BEAVER

Bishop Fred Hiltz, head of theAnglican Church of Canada, cameto Oakville’s St. Simon to high-light optimistic news to faithfulmembers at their 10 a.m. serviceon Sunday.

His uplifting message contrast-ed the negative media reports inFebruary when two area parishesbroke away to join a conservativechurch group.

Sunday’s visit was the bishop’sfirst in Oakville since becominghead of the Anglican Church ofCanada last year. His mission was toraise awareness of The PrimateWorld Relief and DevelopmentFund (PWRDF), an organizationdedicated to providing financial andhuman resources to restore, main-tain, and develop troubled commu-nities in Canada, Africa, Asia, LatinAmerican and Caribbean.

“The Anglican Church ofCanada is strong and well,” saidHiltz during the service and alsoreminded St. Simon membersabout the connection betweentheir faith and the power of givingto others.

“When you support PWRDF,you are really living in a faithfulway your baptism vows—torespect the dignity of other people,

to help people who are in very dif-ficult circumstances and to dowhat you can in your own waywith your own resources to tryand change the world for good,”said Hiltz.

As first Primate to be president ofPWRDF, Hiltz spoke about the roleof the organization and the impor-tance of helping less fortunate com-munities at home and abroad.

“His visit was great and he cen-tred on the mission of the ministryof the church worldwide, which Ithink is a message that we need tohear and we need to remember,”said Rev. Darcey Lazerte. “I nevermet him before and I never evenheard about how he preached. Ifound his message was upliftingand insightful and he was person-able at the same time.”

The Primate’s visit comes morethan a month after St. Hilda’sChurch in Oakville and St.George's in Lowville, separatedfrom the Anglican Church ofCanada because of their liberalviews and joined the AnglicanNetwork in Canada. During theservice, Hiltz briefly acknowledgedthe difficult challenges the churchhad faced, but highlighted itsstrengths and support receivedthrough the PWRDF.

“We’ve got some very difficultchallenges in front of us. We’ve gotthe reality that several parishesacross the country have left theAnglican Church of Canada andthat’s difficult for all of us to bear.We don’t like seeing that sort ofthing happening, people breakingaway,” said Hiltz in an interviewafterwards. “At the same time, Ithink we also need to help peoplesee that all has not been rue. Thatthere are other aspects of the life ofthe Anglican Church of Canada thatcontinue to be very strong and con-tinually enjoy a lot of good support.”

The parish was filled with peo-ple, an unusual sight for a daydubbed “low Sunday” because ofthe paltry attendance followingEaster. People came out to meetthe Primate and say good-bye tothe Assistant Curate Rev. JeffWard, who is leaving to go to

Bishop Fred Hiltz

another parish. “It’s a great honour for us to have him

here. It is not everyday you have the headof the church of Canada come to yourchurch,” said Diana Coen, a member of St.Simon for 14 years.

After the service ended, Hiltz conversedwith members and headed to the luncheon

held at the parish. The small St. Simoncommunity and Hiltz joined for food andfarewell sketches for Ward ending themeeting with laughs.

“I love these opportunities where I cancome and worship with people on aSunday morning and see the parish andits life for what it is,” said Hiltz.
