BJ better bet than Mitchell

LET’S call it the SuperCoachStampede.

People falling over them-selves to trade for the man whowould take them to glory.

That man? Sydney’s TomMitchell.

Mitchell’s 114 against theWestern Bulldogs and 125against Melbourne in his firsttwo appearances of 2015 havesparked a massive rush for theleft-footer.

Throw in a juicy price of$405,600, forward eligibilityand Jesse Hogan reaching hisceiling and you have the recipefor a SuperCoach Stampede.

As of yesterday afternoon,Mitchell had been introducedto more than 21,000 sides.

Expect that total to sky-rocket before the Swans playtomorrow night.

But if you can manage tostand still amid the crush, youmay wonder whether this isfool’s gold.

It’s easy to forget that this isa player who has been frustrat-ingly cast to the periphery formuch of his young career —sometimes because of injuryand sometimes because heplays for one of the most tal-

ent-laden sides in the comp.Yes, Isaac Heeney is out for

4-6 weeks with a knee, but theSwans midfield is deeper thanthe Pacific. Mitchell has onlyplayed 22 games in three-and-a-bit years. There’s no doubt-ing he’s a super-talent andlooks a more mature prospectthis season, but I don’t know ifwe can trust him. Actually, Ijust don’t know if we can trustcoach John Longmire.

Bottom line: Is Mitchell un-derpriced? Yes. But will he be atop-six forward by season’send? Unlikely.

Don’t listen to those whosay you’ve missed the boat onBrendon Goddard. Yes, the Es-sendon veteran went up 29klast week, but he is still 12kcheaper than he was before theseason started

Consider the extra spend asinsurance.

Without injury, Goddardwill finish among the best half-dozen SuperCoach forwards.

You couldn’t say that aboutMitchell with the same cer-tainty.sam.edmund@news.com.au
