    It’srecommendedthatyoufocusonthemedia,cultural,ortechnologicalsceneoftheregionsortheirconnectiontotheworld,butthisisnotmandatory.Youhavetogetpermissionfrommeearlyinthesemesterifyoudecideonadifferentfocus.Referenceatleastfourreadingsfromthisclass(Iamlookingforsubstantiveengagementswiththereadings,notsuperficialmentioning).Youalsohavetoidentifyanddiscussatleast5outsideacademicsourcesofreferencesthat’srelevanttoyourtopic.Mostimportantly,thisprojectwillhavetoinvolveempiricalresearch,notjustareviewofexistingliterature.Thatis,youactuallyhavetoconductanoriginalresearchyourselftocollectdatatoansweryourresearchquestionsandsupportyourargument(s).Sometypicalresearchmethodsincludediscourseanalysis,semioticanalysis,textualanalysis,interviews,ethnography,survey,andarchival/historicalresearch.Ifyouhavenopriorexperienceconductingempiricalresearch,refertoCh3fromthebookHowtodomediaandculturalstudies(byJaneStokes)beforeyoudecideonyourtopic.Thischapterwillguideyouthroughtheprocessofcomingupwitharesearchtopicandwritingaresearchproposal.ThischapterisavailableonCanvasunder“Week9”.Throughoutthesemester,youwillcompletetheprojectinfoursteps.Iwillguideyouthroughtheproject,devotingsomeclasshourstoworkonconceptualizingyourprojectinclass.1.ResearchTopic,Background,andResearchQuestions(3%)Iencourageyoutotalktomeduringofficehoursearlytobrainstormyourresearchproject.Byweek7,youwillbeaskedtohandina2-pagenarrativethatidentifyyourresearchtopic,describethebackgroundofyourresearch,andlistasetofresearchquestions(counts8points,or4%).Duringthesecondsessionofweek7,eachstudentwillbrieflyintroducehisorhertopic(intwo-threeminutes)totheclasstoreceivefeedbackfromtheclassandtheprofessor.Gradingexpectation:Youhavetocomeupwithatopicthatisrelevanttothisclassandinterestsyoupersonally.Inthebackground,youmustclearlyarticulatethetheoreticalandempiricalsignificanceandvalueofyourtopic.Atthisstage,it’sokaythatyourresearchquestionsaretentative,butcomingupwithafewresearchquestionshelpyouidentifyexactlywhatyouwanttoexplorewithyourtopic.Iwillhelpyoubettercraftyourresearchquestionsandmaybesuggestsomeacademicsourcestoreaddowntheroad.2.ResearchProposalandAnnotatedBibliography(10%)

    3. ResearchQuestionsYourresearchquestionsshouldbeboththeoreticallyrelevantandempiricallyimportant.Agoodresearchquestionusuallyfillinagapinexistingresearchor/andaddressanimportantsocial,political,orculturalphenomenonthatisunder-studiedormis-understood.

    4. ResearchmethodsHowyouaregoingtoansweryourresearchquestions.Sometypicalresearchmethodsincludediscourseanalysis,semioticanalysis,textualanalysis,interviews,ethnography,survey,andarchival/historicalresearch.
