FROM THE PASTOR The Next Time You Look at a Rainbow I remember watching the Johnny Carson Show when I was much younger…and seeing the fa-mous actor Orson Welles read from Genesis 9: “Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the wa-ters of a flood…When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting cove-nant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth”. When Welles finished reading, he preached a one-sentence sermon: “God is not going to destroy us, but it remains to be seen whether or not we will destroy ourselves.” Like most interesting sermons, Orson Welles’ homily was partly true…and partly un-true…NO sermon EVER covers the whole truth of the majesty and mystery of God!!! His sermon was true because it reminds us of how much trust God has given us…our survival in large part DOES depend on how we use wisely the resources God has given us to tend and enjoy! But the sermon is NOT true because it appears to make God only passive: God will look at the rainbow in the sky and remember not to act against us. But Welles says nothing about how God will pursue us with love, grace, and care! In the Bible, we are told again and again that God does far more than promise not to destroy us. God gives us resources to move from brutality to compassion, from violence to peace, from hatred to love. God gives the Law to provide guidance for daily living. God gives us a new way of living and acting in our fellowship with Christ. And God gives us a vision so that we can see past the shadows of fear and death…to resurrection and new life. The next time you see a rainbow…give thanks to Our God who promises that He will not destroy us…and who also moves among us so that we might be a new people! Peace and Love, Pastor John

Samaritans Table
Ministry Update 2020 marks the beginning of the 9th year serving Samaritan’s Table here at Kimball. This ministry is a partnership between Cooperative Christian Ministry and local churches. It allows families in our community to stretch their income by providing evening meals 3 times per week. Meals are served each week at host churches in the downtown Kannapolis area: First Baptist on Mondays, Trinity United Methodist on Wednesdays and right here at Kimball on Thursdays. We appreciate all the churches that support this vital ministry by providing meals & especially those that support Kimball: St Joseph’s RC Church, Bethpage UMC, Memorial Baptist Church, McGill Baptist Church & Mt. Mitchell UMC. Gordon Foods was gracious enough to serve in 2019 as well. We are also thankful to the folks at Kimball who have served meals on a regular basis: Liz Fisher along with our youth & pre-k staff and our choir. Thank you to Cliff Scott for tirelessly setting up for the meals and running the dishwasher for the last few years! Special thanks to Joe Saullo & Gaye St. John who have graciously volunteered their time to help out on Thursday evenings.
In 2019 we served 1,624 meals at Kimball. As you can see there is truly a need for this ministry - it is a blessing to many in our community and a blessing to those who serve too!
Monetary donations are welcomed to help cover the cost of supplies. Contact Doris Teumer at 704-305-0761 or dmteumer@yahoo.com for more information, questions, or if you would like to volunteer to serve a meal (we have some dates open) or to help out.
New Stove Just in case you have not been in the Kimball kitchen lately, please take the time to drop in and view our latest addition. Due to the magnanimous donation
from a donor wishing to remain anonymous, Kimball is the proud recipient of a brand new Imperial, state of the art, stainless steel gas stove which features: a 60 inch range, including 6 burners & a 24 inch griddle, 2 standard ovens, thermostat control for griddle, and stainless steel backguard with shelf. The timing could not have been better, as our older stove had one foot (oven) in the grave and was on death watch. The consensus was that gas was the way to go. New gas lines were paid for by the generous contributions of 6 different groups in our congregation. Tom Kilby deserves our thanks for sourcing this stove and coordinating the installation. By now it is highly probable that several have had the chance to try out our new addition. If you have not yet, please see Tom for instructions before using this stove. This is a piece of equipment that we can be proud of and as a congregation, we give a rousing THANK YOU to our donor!
Thank You Expressed to our Church!
Our church has received letters of thanks from agencies in our
Synod following our Holiday gifts. Agape/Kure Beach Ministries, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Lutheran Services in the Carolinas, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Novus Way Lutheridge/Lutherock and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America all communicated their appreciation for year end gifts from the congregation – all made possible by your generosity and care.
