The present conditions and prospectsof the summer lemon crop, in this con-sular district, seem to be satisfactory.

The crop is not so abundant as that oflast year, but it is of a superior quality.However, there are plenty of lemons ofthe 300 and 360 size, which are usuallyexported to the United States, and ifprices at the New York market con-tinue as encouraging as they are atpresent, they willall be shipped there.

The average prices for good, ripelemons are now from 15 to 16 lire($2.89J to $3,088) per 1080 fruits; whileVerdelli are sold at from 18 to 20 lire($3.47£ to $3.86). But these prices maynaturally increase from day to day, ifthe export fever will continue as atpresent. Freight rates to Americanports: One shilling (24£c) to Is 2d(28&c) per box.

Here is the quantity of green fruitexported to the United States duringthe month of April, ultimo, with a com-parison of the same month last year:Lemons, boxes 239,037 175,318Lemons, half boxes 97,719 681Oranges, half boxes 23,748 6,718

MESSINA LEMON MARKET.

The present condition of the summerlemon crop in this district is good, andthe prospects are that the yield will beequal to that of last year, but the qual-ity promises to be much better.

The prices paid average about 9 shil-lings c. i. f. New York, Boston, Phila-delphia and Baltimore.

The rates of freight are unchanged —Is 2d, with a rebate of a penny at theend of the season.

Winters Enterprises.

To the Editor: —The building andfurnishing of the new warehouse of theWinters Dried Fruit Co. at Winters isnearly completed. The Anderson-Barngrover Co. is furnishing the pack-ing machinery. The building is 150x30feet on the ground, and about 30 feetto the eaves inside, practically threestories. The Yosolano packing house,which was taken over by the companyfrom Mr. J. L. Harlan, is 72x30 feet,two stories. There is a good supply ofskilled white labor to be had in Win-ters and vicinity, and the new companycalculates to be able to store a millionpounds of fruit, and to resulphur, pro-cess and pack two carloads a day thisfall. The Winters Dried Fruit Co.,largely composed of growers of fruit inthat section, has the only warehouseequipment at Winters, and willundoubt-edly operate it much to the benefit ofthat side of Yolo county.

When Mr. Bird of the A. Bird Can-ning & Mercantile Co. of St. Joseph,Mo., first came to Winters, some weeksago, to look over the fruit raising inthat section to determine the feasibilityof opening a cannery there, he said hedoubted if there was fruit enoughraised there to keep a cannery run-ning ; but after he had ridden throughthe orchards there for half a day hesaid he believed enough fruit went towaste tokeep a cannery running, tosaynothing of the vegetables grown therewhich might be utilized. Crude Oil Smoke for Hoppers.

T. E. Brown of Gartield has usedcrude oil to fight grasshoppers afterthey get their wings. He says thesmoke has driven the hoppers awayrapidly. He suggests wetting theground with water and then pouring

on the oil. The moist ground preventsthe oil from saturatiug into the earth,and when burned it makes a densesmoke.
