Making track games from stories

• Choose a story with a simple journey sequence:

• Stick Man, The Gruffalo, Chicken Licken, Handa’s Surprise, Suddenly (Preston Pig), Jack and the Beanstalk, other traditional tales)

• Set out the cards and include a card when the main character meets on of the others. Consider a reward or forfeit depending on who is on the card

More advanced track games

• Consider track games where there is an element of other routes or a race

• Little Red Riding Hood – the wolf and Red Riding Hood’s route to Granny’s cottage.

• Think about the number of steps that need to be taken to reach the destination.

Wolf

More advanced track games• Consider ways of choosing the route e.g. throw a particular number /

answer a question correctly , take a ‘chance’ card which gives instructions

• Add in forfeit / reward cards to control the movement through the game.

Other ideas - Rules

• Decide a clear set of rules for the game

• Consider:

• The object of the game

• How to win

• How to take turns and progress through the game

Movement rules for chess

Other ideas

Playing Pieces

• Make playing pieces for your game

• You could make:

• Cardboard cut out playing pieces

• Playdough characters or shapes / Fimo –heat in an oven to make it hard

How might particular pieces move on a board game?

Alien playing pieces – What’s the game?

Think about:

• What type of game it will be

• Where the game will be set

• The objective

• What the playing board will look like

• The narrative that will drive the game

Other ideas

Box Design

• Consider different box shapes

• Deconstruct cereal boxes to see how they are made (look for the glued edge to be able to open out the complete box net)

• Design the shape of the box –use a range of nets to decide on the shape

• Make a lid for the box (Will it hinge off the main net or be a separate open net shape?)

Other ideas

• Dominoes

• Card games: number bonds, times tables

• Different dice

• Card sort games
