2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Special Events Department is responsible for the management and organisation of various activities and events which will take place around the SOWSG in 2003.

Art Exhibitions ‘Share the Feeling’Goal: To mount and display artwork by individuals with a learning disability from Ireland and from each of the 160 countries participating in Special Olympic Programs worldwide.

Where: Libraries and other civic buildings in Dublin and 160 Host Towns.

When: 7th – 29th June 2003.

Healthy Athlete

The mission of the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete Programme is to improve each athlete’s ability to train and compete in Special Olympics.

•There will be six programmes in 2003:•Optometry (Opening Eyes) •Dentistry (Special Smiles) •Audiology (Healthy Hearing) •Physiotherapy (FUNfitness) •Podiatry•Health Promotion

Guests

Goal: To identify, invite, involve and entertain Guests with the aim of maximising

the visibility of Special Olympics worldwide.

What:Guests will participate in the Games by:•Attending sports.•Giving awards.•Hosting sports clinics and demonstrations.•Walking with a delegation at the Opening Ceremony.•Attending receptions, media interviews

Olympic Town Goal: To provide athlete focussed, interactive

entertainment for the athletes during the competition schedule.

Who: Olympic Town will be open to athletes and their coaches only.

What: The entertainment provided will include music, theatre, dance, internet café, arts and crafts.

Athlete Entertainment

Goal: To provide nightly entertainment for the athletes during Games.

Torch Run-Final Leg

The ‘Flame of Hope’ will be lit in Greece

Arrives Bangor on 13th June 2003

International Team: 130 Law Enforcement officers (incl. Gardaí & PSNI and 10 SO Athletes

Irish Torch Run-1,500 Gardaí & PSNI – fundraising.

Ceremonies will be held in a number of towns en route: Host towns will also be included.

Festival 2003: RDS Simmonscourt.

Tented Village. Target audience: Public, Families, Media, Guests and Athletes. Content: Showcase for Sponsors, Game Partners and Official Suppliers, information centre and entertainment.
